Probably just down to consumer behavior; people go there for other things, but when there, they go "awww I just gotta have a hash brown with my xyz", so whether its $1 or $3, its reasonably inconsequential to the overall purchase…but yeah on its own, the difference is considerable.
Yeah, I don't know how McDonald's can get away with charging such ridiculous prices for a hash brown.
$1 is reasonable. $2.50 for one is crazy, when you can buy 1kg of frozen hash browns for a few dollars.
