Cheapies Frequently Answered Questions:
  • You're currently unable to use discounts when purchasing Sharetank fuel (Pumped, Flybuys or otherwise).
  • You're currently unable to spoof your location to hunt for the cheapest fuel (this includes rooted phones, spoofed GPS as well as phones that are charging).
  • You do earn Flybuys or Airpoints when purchasing Sharetank fuel.
  • You can use Sharetank to "pay" for fuel anywhere in the country (i.e. buy in Auckland, use it in Tauranga)
  • Any grade of fuel can be bought (91, 95, diesel). They go into their own virtual tanks.

    Was about to post this.

    • Lol, my apologies! I suspect there may be a few more lower prices to come so next one is yours :P

  • +1

I don't think we can use Pumped Discount
Can I get Pumped discounts or other discounts with Sharetank?

    • That is correct, no discounts can be applied to Sharetank purchases (you do still get Flybuys and Airpoints though)

  • +2

Gasby is showing 2.22 for me, wonder if someone has added the 6 cents discount incorrectly when reporting the price.

    • +1

Hmm, yeah someone's reported the price with the Pumped discount, and then the app is adding on (taking off) the 6c again… lol.

    • +1

Almost certainly yuor are correct - there are a lot of clueless people out there who don't understand how Gaspy works (along with most of the rest of the world in which they live).

Such things often remind me of 'Eternal September' back in the day.

      • Hey, my year of birth!! That said it was fixed in between the time I first posted that reply and when I checked again afterwards, so there are some good Samaritans who hopefully didn't get caught out by the lower than normal price.

    • $2.18 today for 91 because 10c off - wish we could use discounts on the Sharetank lol

  • +1

Can you purchase both 91 and 95 on sharetank? Or only one fuel grade?

    • +1

Yes, as well as Diesel. They each go into their own virtual tanks.

  • Bit confused by the title OP. It makes me think that $2.22 is achievable for Sharetank. Might just be me though.

    • +2

Not just you. Had to read it a few times to get it.
As the deal is about Sharetank I think it would be clearer to remove all references to the ‘pumped’ discount price as it’s not achievable. Would make it less confusing.

    • Fair points: I can see the potential confusion but also didn't want to be too wordy. I had added the "at the pump with Pumped discount" in hopes to justify the $2.22 price, but it does sound like if you're at the pump you can get $2.22 for the Sharetank. I'll remove that part

  • The challenge at the moment is knowing how much to buy. Every time i think the price for petrol is heading up the price in Wiri seems to drop.

    • I hear that. I've decided to buy a tank at time (50L) if the price drops. So in a way, DCA comes into effect. The other thing with Sharetank, is every now and then they have bonus litres, so it would be waste to get close to or more than the 150L threshold where you would start getting free litres.

  • +1

I think y'all over thinking it.

Fuel will go up 28cpl roughly on Jan 31st… (or the lead up to it), so just buy what you can afford.

    • Fingers crossed Z will have another Bonus litres promo before then which would make this even greater value for money. That said, sound logic (Tuesday's and Wednesday's are usually the cheapest)

    • Is it confirmed that share tank price includes tax? So they can't just add on the tax to the share tank price?

I think they will keep the tax off of until after the elections, Labour need all the help they can get.

  • Mind my ignorance as first time really getting into Sharetank, the app says regarding backuo payment method "This payment method will only be charged if a saving with Sharetank cannot be guaranteed or if there is a Sharetank fuel balance of less than 15L"

Does this mean there always need to 15l of fuel or more in Sharetank to use Sharetank. As in, if i got less than 15l in Sharetank, I cannot sue it all and my backup card will be charged automatically?

    • Please note: right now you need at least 15L in your Sharetank to use it with Pay by Plate / Pay in App. If you have less than 15L, Pay by Plate / Pay in App will always use your backup payment method.

Here is the full FAQ sharetank FAQ. Basically yes, Sharetank wont be available if less than 15L is in it, but you can deplete it to lower than this in a single fill up.

Thanks OP. This is an excellent way to control fuel spend, especially given the humongous price spread between Z stations in Auckland.

    • No problem! And I completely agree. It would be great if all the same brand had the same prices within the same region - can understand different prices across the country.

  • Can pre-purchased sharetank be used outside of the range (30km)?

For instance, If I purchase in city (price match with Manuka) and used it in North Shore (outside of the range)

    • Absolutely! This is exactly why Sharetank was made (you can also share it with someone else (up to 5 someone else's) if you wish, and it can be used across the country even.

Anyone ever have an issue in which sharetank won’t let you use the last 0.2L?

Bought 45L and tried to use it all, but the pump just stopped at 44.8L. Attendant at the pump just said he’s never used sharetank before…
I mean it’s a small amount but just curious haha.

    • +2

Haha, yes! Exactly the same happened to me as well. I think it's a sneaky way of Z keeping a little bit each time. Every depleted Sharetank is 0.25L, that'll add up over time in terms of "savings" even though we've paid for it.

      • +1

That’s a bit shitty tbh haha, I wanna use all the fuel I paid for!

        • Seems like a reasonable thing to complain about, and if they brush it off, forward to the Commerce Commission.

    • +1

The way around it is to fill up first then go in and scan the qr code at the counter, you can even get a receipt this way.

      • +1

        Hi kartikb,

If you do that, and fill up with more than you have in the ShareTank, does it fully utilise the ShareTank volume first (all the way to zero, rather than 0.2L), then you pay the difference in cash / by card etc?

If so, I am guessing you'd pay the pump price for the excess (which is fine)?

Also, does the receipt show the full amount of fuel, or just the amount that you paid for in cash / by card?

        Thanks,

        Alan.

      • +1

You do get a receipt when you top up your Sharetank as well as after using it to fill up.

    • +1

That happened to me as well; I had 21L in the Sharetank but could only fill my tank up to 20.8L and wouldn't go past. Extremely cheeky of them, and I'm not a fan of it.

  • Any tricks to spoof your phone into thinking you're in a different location to get the best share tank rate?

    • It’s possible, there’s a guide on Ozbargain but you risk your account getting banned with no refund of the purchased fuel. I wonder where in NZ has the cheapest fuel…

      • I think Z has thought of the common possibilities. Both rooted devices and spoofed location are detected when trying to to fill up the Sharetank. Curious to know if there is any other method, but the OzBargain one doesn't overcome Z's double checking

    • If you’re gonna go with this route, only buy as much as you are gonna use within the next few days or so. That way you don’t risk losing money if your account is banned.

  • Missed out!

    • ?? Just to confirm that you're looking at the 91 RON tank and not the 95? I think 95 opens by default. 91 is still $2.289/L as of 30.11.2022 @ 10:06pm

      • +1

Yeah I just topped up. It’s still working

New low for Auckland, granted not by much but every cent helps:

    • 91 is $2.259/L in the app (updated: 12:12pm 04.12.2022)
    • 95 is $2.419/L in the app (updated: 12:12pm 04.12.2022)
  • In the Sharetank T&C it says:
"Fuel purchased on Sharetank does not expire, but you must use your Sharetank Balance within a reasonable period of time after purchase."

What defines a 'reasonable period of time'?

    • I reckon it means they can give reasonable notice of cancellation, and you have to use it or lose it.
