Kia ora,
Just wanted to see if anyone can help me as I don't know where else to ask. I forgot my Apple ID password. I get a message saying that in a few days they will send me a message to reset my password. So a few days later they text me and say I have to wait until 6th Mar and I will be sent a reset link. So today (6th Mar) I get sent an email and text with a link to reset it. It seems pretty dodgey to me that for a huge company like Apple, they would have such a complicated reset password process? I'm worried this is a Scam of some sort? I mean, why would I have to wait more than a week to be sent a reset link, and be sent a text saying that the reset link will be sent to me in a few days? The email is sent from [email protected] with a do not reply address is [email protected].
Can someone confirm if this is genuinely from Apple or is a definitely a Scam and I shouldn't follow the link? If a scam, how do I reset my password then?
Thank you soo much!!

The password reset process is drawn out because it has been the means of many high profile account takeovers (ie hacking) in the past. They want to make absolutely sure that you are who you say you are. Here's a long but fascinating read of you're interested in how bad it used to be: https://www.wired.com/2012/08/apple-amazon-mat-honan-hacking…
It's legit. And it's normal for you to wait a week in order to reset the password. I've seen this before when working on an Apple MDM for our MSP customers, back when I was a sysadmin many moons ago.
And on the contrary, it's actually not dodgy. They make you go through such a tedius and painful process to reset the password and if anything, it's more paranoia and focus on security. Even if you call up their support to provide all the proof that you are the owner of the Apple account or the owner of your phone, they can't do anything - because a) their support sucks and they're absolutely useless level 1 service desk sheep and b) it's their policy to not do that anyway. They won't help you unlock your iPhone, bypass iCloud activation, that sort of stuff.
Usually, the people who post these types of questions are not the real owners of the account or the phone. I've seen far too many cases where people just want to know ways to bypass iCloud activation, so they can use their newly stolen iPhones. I'm not up to date on Apple related news anymore, but I know this is definitely possible as I've done it for a friend in the past (it was legit his phone, so that's fine).
Not saying this is the case for you OP. Just saying that this is common.
Thanks everyone. Makes sense now and I've had it reset, thanks! 😊
Yes, that looks like it's from Apple.
