Any Suggestions for a Very Cheap Laptop?

I hope I've posted this in the right place.

My mother in law is on a very tight budget and after a basic laptop. I've advised her you get what you pay for so not to expect it to last long. She only needs to do internet banking and emails.

We bought her a good mobile phone but she likes a bigger screen. Have found this one.

Any other suggestions? Thanks so much.

Perhaps consider a chromebook? Be so simple and quick for the low budget and easy to use

IMO, wouldn't go for the one you picked, 4GB with windows 11 is going to be a bad time.
Agree with the chromebook being better for MIL needs/price point.

The amount of these that get returned for "being slow"
Just don't buy that e-waste and buy Ex-lease or a chromebook as pointed out by others.

100% Chromebook. I bought one for someone else years ago in a very similar situation (YouTube) and they're still using it. Installed UBO for them and they're as happy as a clam.

I would recommend something with a 14" or larger screen, not one of those 11.6" ones. Everything else will generally be fine.

It's either Chromebook or look around on Facebook for a decent 2nd hand one for ~$100, new battery for $50 and then upgrade to an SSD for another $50.

I agree with the Chromebook recommendation given what you've told us. Far, far less that can go wrong. Something like this would do nicely:

But if you discover she needs Windows then something like this with the SSD upgrade would be pretty good. I've bought from this seller before:

It might be worth reaching out to a non-profit such as TechMate in Christchurch (https://www.techmate.org.nz/) if the budget is very tight. These non-profits refurbish laptops and donate them to those who do not have access/funds to purchase for themselves. :-)

Same as everyone else has said, buying cheap windows laptops leads to a very bad time. Either go ex leased or go Chromebook for the money as they will perform much nicer than a new low spec machine.

An alternative may be to consider if she'd be open to a tablet, something like a lenovo m10. For banking and emails you'd have apps you can use that may fill the requirements.

Just get a 2nd hand laptop on TM. I got one for like $300 several years back, had decent specs (16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and had a external GPU as well (forgot the model) and the CPU was one of the higher tiers at the time).

What others have said is pretty spot on:
    1. Chromebook (especially if she's an android user, but not required)
    2. Used laptop PC/MacBook (16gb ram or bust - I bought a old high spec macbook with i7 and 16gb ram for $250 recently.)
    3. Ex-lease laptop (again, 16gb ram)

    • Used laptop PC/MacBook (16gb ram or bust - I bought a old high spec macbook with i7 and 16gb ram for $250 recently.)

For an m1 macbook or above (but probably well out of ops budget, you'd be looking at 800-1100 for a base model) 8gb would be fine

  • Does it need a working battery? I have a asus ux301 that I don't need but the battery is stuffed, other than that it works fine, you can have it if you want.

  • 2nd hand ? If so 100 to 200 for Chromebook, near new one, 250 ish on wards ThinkPad it's easy to get new battery, m1 apple MacBook Air 1000 ish get one with battery over 70 at least it shows up in the os .

New laptops cheapest price is tricky in NZ as we don't get good deals
