Free 7 kWh of EV Charging Per Day @ JOLT App (Christchurch and Auckland)

200

Have seen quite a few of these charging stations starting to pop up. You can get 7 kWh free per day every day which is handy, although requires signing up in their app with a credit/debit card so need to be careful to avoid being charged.

How much does it cost to charge?

JOLT offers 7 kWh free daily for all customers! Your energy allowance resets at midnight.

After you’ve consumed 7 kWh for the calendar day, you will be charged the per kWh rate. You can find the per kWh rate in your app, just click on a map pin to see the rate for the charger you want to use.

Please be aware that there is a minimum fee of $0.50 for any paid charging session.

To clarify, in NZ there is a minimum fee of $0.50NZD and in Australia there is a minimum fee of $0.50AUD

Whether you are in Australia or New Zealand we have membership option(s) with their own benefits and charging rates. You can find these in the app by navigating to Account > Membership (under your name at the top of the screen) > Upgrade/Explore Memberships

  • Interesting, thanks for posting.

The variable pricing after 7kwhs seems weird.

      For my local:

      47c/kWh
      Idle fee $1/min
      Minimum fee 50c

For most people they will only end up paying 47c.kWh (once the free 7kWh is run out).

50c minimum will exist to avoid jolt being hit by excessive transaction costs for tiny transactions (but does mean, one should stop their free 7kWh charge at say 6.8kWh to avoid rolling over to 7.01kWh and getting hit my that).

Idle fees are to deter people from leaving their car which has completed charging hooked up to the charger, which can be frustrating for anybody waiting.

  • Does it mean 50cents will always apply even if we only charge 7kw?

No. I have charged for completely free with Jolt twice before.

No, as long as you stop at 7.00 or below. I tend to press stop at 6.88 or so. Takes a wee while for communication to happen via the app, so usually stops at around 6.95kw or so. It’ll charge you 50c as soon as you hit 7.01kw, so be careful if you’re only wanting to use your free daily allotment!

  • Thanks for the update! Do we need to put number plate to start the charging so they know which car it is charging?

You need to uses the app to enable the charger. (you nominate which charger and which cord you want activated by scanning a QR code on the charger, or picking it out on the map).

It doesn't care which car is charging. As long as you have a smartphone, credit card & and data connection you are good to go. (unlike other charge providers I don't think it is possible to activate the charger by a means other than a smartphone with data).

  • Is 7wkh = approx 1 hour wait ?

    • ~5 mins if you’re charging at a rate of 75 KWh.

      • FYI their chargers are 25kw, so pretty much the slowest of the fast public chargers.

    • last week when I charged it took me 21mins for 6.6kWh. Charger I'm using was 25kW rated but average around 18kw. As the battery closer to full the charge speed drop though

Get on an EV plan at home. 7kwh would cost me just 80c and save all the fuss.

It's more expensive than free though. I don't bother doing it much for 7kWh, but it's handy having it as an option if I get caught short one day for an emergency free top up.
