Power Banks in New Zealand

Where are the good ones available in NZ?

Seems amazon won't ship them to us:

Also has anyone bought the Kogan ones?

  • Baseus makes pretty decent products. I bought this maybe 2 years ago and haven't really used it much, but the charge is still at around 99%.

While it's only 22W charging, I think it's more than enough for most people.

    • Yeah nah looking for 100w+ ones to charge laptop and stuff, As my lappy only last about 3hrs and wanting to be able to sit out in parks and stuff (in summer esepcially and do work)

  • Mi, Anker & Baseus are good brands. Check pbtech for MI.

  • Mi or Xiaomi or redmi powerbanks are good value available in NZ I have a 50 watt Xiaomi from india for 80 NZD approximately one of the best powerbanks can charge MacBook Air and phone

  • Did some research on this previously.

The best one I can find in NZ currently is from Ugreen: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/BAPUGR90597A/UGREEN-PB205-1…
It does come on special from time to time.

    • The reason power banks cannot be sent internationally is due to shipping restrictions due to the capacity.
When they are sent in bulk they have to follow special packing requirements and various paperwork is required.

      • Yeah i figured that but i wonder why the companies Xiaomi/Anker aren't doing so, if they're bringing them all the way to Aus but not NZ

I guess at that sort of pricing in Nz, I'm probably better of getting my siblings to buy one when its on sale in Aus and bring it over

  • Do remember there are restrictions on how much capacity you can carry in air-plane in case you intend to do so. I think sweet spot is 10000mah.

  • I got this for my steam deck and it is great.
Not sure if it was the cheapest deal thought.

But was NZ supplier and fast service.

  • Really depends what you want to use them for.

I went the Samsung route via their edu store their 10,000mAh power banks are ~$34 shipped. (of course I brought them when there was a too good to be true discount code so payed way less than that)

  • This one is really good - Fast and very compact !

    • Thanks but need something that does 65w or more for my laptop.
I tried plugging into 30w PD power strip and it constantly complains about slow charge, not enough juice.
Got a 65w Gan charger and no complaint so hence was looking for a 100w+ one, since if i'm already spending some moneys.

      • I tried plugging into 30w PD power strip and it constantly complains about slow charge, not enough juice.

Does the 30W PD strip charge the laptop okay, albeit slowly, or does the laptop just refuse to accept a charge from the 30W PD strip at all?

        • Nah it's more like drip charge and won't sustain, eventually the battery drains even while plugged and that just on standby with screen off

          • @Huntakillaz: I’ve been using a Cygnett 100W laptop powerbank - it’s been great

          • @Huntakillaz:

Nah it's more like drip charge and won't sustain, eventually the battery drains even while plugged and that just on standby with screen off

            Thanks.

  • Check this if you want for laptop
    Baseus 100W Power Bank 20000mAh Type C

  • Tempted to get the Kogan 737. It seems to be the cheapest option with the most bang for buck and I like the interface. But not enough reviews on it and it seems like it's rated average?

Looks like MightyApe sells it too:
    https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/kogan-27000mah-140w-pd-p…

    UPDATE:
I just bought it from Dicksmith. Gonna be a guinea pig and test it out.

    • I'm just in the process of returning mine for a refund after only having it a couple of weeks, it stops charging once it hits 50% capacity.
Last Kogan power bank for me - the last one I had to be disposed of due to a fire hazard recall notice.

      • Oh damn. The exact same one that I just bought?

Is the return free or do you have to pay for return postage back to Aussie

        • Yeah, exact some one.
I don't have to return it, they just asked me to 'dispose it'.

          • @19th: Well on the plus side, you got a 13,500mah battery bank for free.

          • @19th: Hi mate, what's the contact email you used? I've raised a few tickets with them and haven't received any further response for about 5 days now. I need to contact them about something completely separate. Tried their landlines that I found on Google, but it's just an automated message telling you to create a ticket on their website, which I did.

    • Hey mate, can I have an update on it?

how's it working out for you?
I see dicksmith have it for $134 atm

      • +1

They shipped it out only yesterday, apparently not enough stock available at the time of my order. I bought it for $129 on Dicksmith.

I'll let you know once I've received it.

      • +1

@Huntakillaz - OK, I finally received it today, more than a month after I ordered it and 7 days after their expected delivery date (which was already delayed).

Anyway, first impression is that it's not bad. It looks pretty sleek and would pass off as an Apple product. It's very similar to the gun-metal grey Apple products like the iPad, Macbook, etc.

As for the weight, it's not too heavy. It is noticeable but it's actually not too bad. I thought it would be a lot heavier. It's only slightly heavier than my Baseus 22.5W 20000mAh battery bank (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002965976120.html). I think if this Kogan charger ends up being decent and doesn't just blow up or not hold charge like the other user had, I'll just replace my Baseus and keep this in my bag for emergency charging.

It arrived with 0% battery though, so I'm charging it atm. The highest input wattage is 60W at 20V and 3A. I tried a bunch of my GaN chargers (100W, 245W, etc) and tried a Lenovo 100W charger and various other ones. I also tried a bunch of different cables, ranging from 60W to 200W. No matter which combination I try, I can't get the charging up to 60W, but I did get close to 50W. The cable that this comes with is rubbish btw, so you'll never get it past even 4W of charging. I'm just surprised that out of the $500+ worth of cables I have (and I have A LOT) and the $500+ worth of GaN chargers I have, none of them seem to provide 60W charging to this battery bank, however they happily provide more than 60W charging to my other high-end devices.

I haven't tried output charging yet, which is the main point of using a battery bank. I'll report back when I get this battery bank charged to full and then I'll do some tests.

Here are some photos to show you my testing:

        UPDATE:

It's doing 53.7W charging now. Up to 17% charged from just a few mins of charging. Interestingly, the ampere stayed the same at around 2.31A, but the voltage went up to 22V, even though it showed the input maximum voltage is 20V (I guess +/- 1 or 2 volts variance). It doesn't feel hot either, but my Satechi GaN charger is already feeling a bit warm, although it's not the best GaN charger that I own, it's thermal has always been pretty MEH, so that's normal.

        UPDATE 2:

OK so it has been about an hour now and I checked again and to my surprise, it's doing 59.88W ~ 60.08W charging now, which basically matches the 60W maximum input that it stated. The voltage went up to like 24.99V and the ampere stayed the same. A bit confused why this is so different to the 20V/3A that it advertised, but whatever. The charger feels slightly warm at this point but totally fine by my standards. It's at about 84% charged now. And since plugging it in, I haven't done anything at all, didn't change the cable. Normally, quick charge will engage when the device is super low on battery, then slowly trickle charge and drop the charge rate as it reaches above e.g. 80%. But it seems to be the opposite here for this charger…

  • Looks like Dicksmith sells the Anker 737:
    https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/mobile-world-anker-737-po…

    • $80-100 more than it should be 😭

It's better than the newer Anker Primes according to Reddit

  • If you haven't seen it… A couple of Anker products are available in nz from mightyape for preorder for the 30th of May. Price is crazy tho
