Opinions of TV - LG Vs Sony Vs Samsung

After some opinions for a few TV's/
Looking for one for the folks.
So far want -
- 4k (even low end)
- HDR
- Decent Smart Function
- 55in+
- Budget $1500

Normally would go samsung as their OS is pretty decent, and would be easy enough for the perants to use.
However havnt seem any recent deals.
Looking at these two ATM -
LG 55UH770T $1397
Sony KD55X7000D $1477

Did anyone buy either of these on Boxing day or have one at home they can review.
Or has anyone seen a better deal!

  • i would recommend to forget about the smart function. google chromecast trumps all.

    • Yea got them a chromecast already. But they want something that they wont need to cast to for youtube and the likes.
Personally I use my chromecast more than the built in smart on my samsung.

      • +1

The Sony has chromecast built in, so trumps a stand alone chromecast.
Also you can install apps, so don't really need to use casting anyway - can be useful because easier to search for a special you tube video on a phone then on TV.
I'd get the Sony, I have the HD model, it's so good, can install Kodi directly on it and it's one of the few brands that can output 5.1 sound over optical for third party apps - probably unnecessary for "the folks", but all the options are there. The recording option to hard drive was eventually enabled after an update, wasn't the best but worked, not sure if this TV can do that, it's not listed.

        • Oh that would be useful. Dads a audiophile so 5.1 output would be good too.
Think Ima settle on the Sony - Price is even cheaper at Noel Leeming now

        • does movie box or cinema box etc work through the built in chromecast?

        • @gregclarke: not sure, never heard of them.

        • @gregclarke: they are the best

  • Was going to buy the LG 55UH770T but went with the cheaper LG 55UH652V for $1197 on a boxing day sale at Harvey Normans. what stood out for me was the built in Mic and built in mouse (motion driven). Only difference was the hz rating. - HDR, Smart Function, 4K - works well with my desktop PC at the setting and watching 4K UHD movies, Picture great using lightbox, skytv, Xbox One and Plex. Recording option for Freeview plus I did not try.

    • Yea might be worth going cheaper then, Mic for voice activation? and mouse for smart?

  • Flick me a PM if you are interested in a Refurb https://store.sony.co.nz/KD55X8000C.html for just under $1600, you would be buying directly from Sony.

  • something with android tv (e.g. Sony)

  • LG, $1195 at the moment.

LG also seem to look after their customers better than Sony as well. I brought a 4K Sony tv (8500B) when freeview plus was being launched. The TV is capable of having freeview plus (HbbTV) and can see that it is there, but, hasn't been whitlisted by Sony so can't use it. Sony said at the time that they would update it in a future release, however, they have not done so.They have done so for Australia.

The 4K models that LG were selling at the same time have been updated for freeview plus with a software update.

    • Yea looks like the new firmware on Sony is ok. Just unsure about webOS on LG.

  • For a low end 4k the Koniks Harvey Norman sell gives a good decent picture. Go instore and check one out.

They recently had the 49" below $500.

  • In answer to your original question 55uh770t is a better buy than 55x7000d if priced the same.

  • Hi ,I bought Samsung 55 6500 on boxing day for 1200 from Harvey Norman. My opinions

    +
Great interface ( faster than lg or Sony)
    Good sound for a TV
    Free view plus works seamlessly
    Recording works seamlessly
Can read all sort of files from USB

    -
Picture quality could be better. I think Sony are better in terms of natural colours .

Sony was 200 expensive than this so I bought this one.

One thing was a big priority for me was fast interface and fast boot which is very good in Samsung TV

  • I am using LG right now, before getting i was in the same confusion whether to buy samsung, sony, somebody reffered LG after alot of consideration went for LG nad till now its working better than expected! Its absolutely great, pretty much better than both and probably you'll also save a couple of bucks cause LG is a bit less costy when compared agianst sony or samsung.
