  • iirc you can shuck these externals which makes it a even better deal

    • wouldn't that void the warranty? Do you know what actual physical drive is inside it?

      • Yes, any shucking voids the warranty unless you're able to take it apart perfectly (which is very unlikely).

The drive inside use to be a Seagate Archive, but reports have been coming out that the new version contains a Seagate Barracuda. Don't base your decision to buy on this as it's unknown which drive you'd receive.

        • i love that term 'shucking'

  • Is this really a deal though? These have been at this price point for quite some time now.

Strange how the external USB3 model costs less than the bare drive only.

The only thing with these (if you use as an external drive) is that they come with a plug adaptor , ie, the ac adaptor is built into the plug so you need an adaptor to convert from the US pins to the NZ pins. It would be better if the adaptor were separate to the AC cable, then you could just replace the AC cable with the NZ version.

Still, this is the best deal you can get.

    • Cheapest 8TB locally(internal) is $400+ so I think it's deal worthy even if it's not a deal in the US.

      • I have seen this particular product get as low as $169, $179 has been the normal price for a long time now.

Still way cheaper than here of course :) As with many products listed on amazon.

    • +1

Correct. This is the normal price. The Western Digital My Book 8TB is only $20USD more on amazon and contains an HGST drive (non-SMR). Unless you really think its worth the risk, id stay away from anything that even might contain an SMR drive. Bestbuy have the 8TB easystore for $199USD which contains an 8TB WD Red, but they seem to have youshop's address blacklisted and cancel all my orders :(
