What are people's experience of Echo vs Google Home?
I have been unsing echo for over a month now. It has slightly better home automation compatibility but from what I’ve tried Google Home through the app, seems to be better with general questions like weather, news and other random stuff. I will be getting a home and maybe have both for a while side by side.
I would definitely recommend getting a dot to play with.I've read that.
Google home understands voice better and can do more natural sentences.
Echo dot easy to integrate into home assistant at present.
I have an Echo and three dots since late 2015, 2016. Love them and now they are much easier to localise… No more hacks, like the time zone in Marshall Islands. They are now very good. For example, when I say "recommend a Japanese restaurant" Alexa gives me the nearest restaurants first. They play automatically all the CD disks I bought from Amazon long time ago (added to Amazon library without lifting a finger). I also have Amazon Fire TV with Alexa. My next purchase will be an Echo Show to integrate with Ring Pro cameras. Grab 'em.
How do you get the latest alexa app for android in NZ ?
When I had Android I had to use a VPN. Now with iOS I just set an iCloud account in the USA and that does it.
I'm no conspiracy theorist but it's still uncomfortable to know that Amazon won't disclose whether they share your Echo data:

I have an Amazon Echo in the Lounge and a Dot in my bedroom, i also have Lifx light bulbs in my hallway and bedroom ,Alexa turns them on and off when i ask. My Spotify can play in one place or on all devices at the same time .
In short i love my Echo and Dot
Looks like JB HiFi are competing very well price wise

I'm tempted to get an Echo Dot but on the other hand it would probably be better to wait for the Sonos One which will integrate with both Amazon and Google. It's only a matter of time until Sonos releases them in New Zealand now that Alexa is officially supported.
My biggest annoyance regarding the Alexa system is that it can't (won't) play my local media even though it would be trivial to index my NAS and upload a list of my tagged music to Amazon and then let Alexa play from that. Sonos, Plex and some Alexa skills can do something similar through Alexa, but not fully featured and you have to remember the right syntax. Cloud $ub$cription is king these days…
good find, i pre-ordered 2 from jb hifi
Even sale prices are a rip off
