While men suffered ghastly atrocities on the battlefields, the women of New Zealand also faced the realities of war. Girls gave up their educations to tend to family farms, while other women volunteered by knitting socks for soldiers. Nurses fought to travel to the front lines to tend the wounded, while others challenged the status quo by pioneering campaigns on issues like venereal disease. It’s these stories and many more that are the subject of the latest exhibition, Women’s War, which opens today at The Great War Exhibition.
To celebrate Women’s War, Capital Day has two copies of Make Her Praises Aheard Afar-NZ Women overseas in WW1 by Jane Tolerton to give away. To enter, email [email protected] with ‘‘Women’s War’’ in the subject line by 5pm today.
