  • Free shipping options with these guys any more?

  • banner says store pick up and bank transfer payment type will be disabled during the promo.
so basically all deals will get credit card surcharge (unless you crazy enough to use poli) + compulsory shipping fee =(

    • yep. can confirm.
was looking at d-link network card AC1200 for $59 before deal started.
refreshed the page. price went down to $54.14.
      now it's $54.14 + $5.75 shipping + $1.30(+20c) CC surcharge = $61.39

      mega sale =)

        Exactly, typical PB Tech.

  • Internet banking poli option is available, with no extra surcharge.

      • To be fair banks would oppose services like poli because it cut them off excessive credit card fees. Additionally this article was from 2015 and I haven't really heard any real security issue with poli.

entering your online bank password in some 3rd party app. sure. what can go wrong.
most of the banks here are like 20 years behind and still won't offer even 2nd factor auth.

        • @ember: Don't know of any bank that doesn't offer 2fa.

        • @ember: ASB have had 2FA since the early 2000, before the iPhone IIRC. Although they only do SMS and RSA devices and I think you need to pay for the later. (They do allow on login now. Not sure if they always did or it was only for transactions over the limit you set in the past.) RaboDirect has also had 2FA I think since they launched although not particularly relevant to Poli. HSBC although mostly irrelevant to the market and I'm not sure if they're even supported by Poli also use RSA? device based 2FA although they're still using the old single push buttons ones not the new number pad ones most other country HSBCs now use.

I think banks opposition is fairly half hearted. As I understand it, Poli now logs on for you via their own servers. It would be trivial for banks to ban the IPs Poli uses. Sure they could try and play a cat and mouse game with reassigning IPs, but people aren't going to use Poli if it isn't reliable. In fact, while, I don't know how many transactions Poli makes every day and how many IPs they spread it over, I wouldn't be surprised if Poli automatically comes up on banks fraud protection systems as a warning. (It would seem to me they probably exceed all but the largest corporate proxies, especially if the banks have any decent in NZ geolocation built into their systems.)

From what I read, ASB also sent a cease and desist letter, and while IANAL, given that again from what I've read, Poli used or maybe still does spoof banking websites I'm guessing the banks have a resonable legal case and clearly the big four have the money that they can afford to test it.

Also I wonder whether the banking regulations would allow the banks to simply refuse to process transactions to Poli based on the transaction details rather than using any IP etc detection. Anyway even if they can't stop the transactions, it seems to me the banks have ample opportunity to really scare people. Send a personalised warning to any customer they detect who used Poli able the risks and possible violation of their banking T&C and the possible consequences to them from a fraud standpoint.

The fact that they've done none of that and just made the occasional comment in the media suggests that most of them, except perhaps ASB, don't really care that much.

          @Nil Einne:
It's not just the login and password, Poli vacuums lots of data from your account:

PB Tech used to do a proper mega sale like 4 to 5 times per year. Now they seem to be doing it once a fortnight :) So basically they are doing a 'briscoes' type sale now, minus the crazy RRP.

  • The deal extended to midnight :)

  • Thanks, Grabbed some eneloop batteries. They have always been cheapest in NZ for them as far as I have found. They snipped a little bit off them, not a huge amount but sweetened what was already a good deal.
