  • For easy access, this deal is available from the 'Pages' menu at the top of the ChoiceCheapies website, throughout this month.

  • FYI the McDonald's app no longer works on rooted phones, and the usual Magisk tweaks no longer work

    • I haven't used the latest version, I reinstalled the app 2.3.0 reset login and used magisk hide and it works as normal.

      • On one of the versions, my friend had to use the randomise package name feature of Magisk but then in some later version it didn't seem to work.

BTW have they at least improved the error message? They use to give some confusing 'not installed from Google Play' or similar message with a error code that didn't actually tell you what the problem was.

    • That's a shame, dumb how they won't allow it on rooted phones….. what difference does it make, really?

      • Think they're trying to make it more difficult for people to fake coupons. They also disabled screenshots on the coupon screen recently. Frankly it's IMO a fairly pointless move since the number of people who it's going to stop who don't already have other options must be tiny but I suspect someone in management demands it. Could also be related to online ordering which isn't available here but is elsewhere. (The app is somewhat universal AFAIK.)

  • Its live!

  • Unsure if McDonalds fans think these deals are amazing, but from a non fan the prices are still too expensive and would need to be cut by half again for me to consider these good deals. Sorry for the negative thoughts šŸ˜

    • I noticed a $3 Big Mac offer in my app today, a Big Mac is worth eating and $3 is a great price for one. I'd be willing to pay up to $6 for one of the "premium" burgers, hopefully that will be a future Nov offer. The standard burgers are tiny, I was so disappointed with my free fillet o fish (monopoly prize), so tiny, never worth $6.20!

      • That Big Mac could be ā€œthe big dealā€ which is for new accounts?
The November offers will mirror the Aussie ones almost just more expensive so I donā€™t think we will see a premium burger deal.

  • Oh man the McDonalds app was awful last time I used it.

You can't queue up what you're wanting to buy and you have to place your order within three minutes of selecting the item. As a result you have to smash it while standing at the counter in front of them then awkwardly stand there while it loads.

After pressing the $3 Big Mac button then having it expire before I could place my order and disappear into the ether I gave up and uninstalled it.

McDonalds have the first and best implementation of self-checkout, but there's absolutely no integration with their app. That part is the slowest part of placing the order, and fully digital, and they've slotted it right into the slowest part of taking an order (queuing and talking to someone).

Burger King is ALMOST there, with the phone generating a code representing your order, but you still have to manually say what your order is at the counter, then apply the code and finally it automatically applies your discount. The self-checkout machines even take codes, but they won't talk to the app, it's crazy.

Is it so hard to make your order in advance, get a code, then type it into the machine and have it appear and take payment.

    • At least with BK you have the option to pay through the app when close to the store then just pick up the order from the counter (Even though the app doesn't even work 80% of the time in my experience). Haven't used maccas app in awhile so not sure I can say the same

      • I only used the app order thing once and they had an "App Order" surcharge so I never used it again.

          About BK's app:

Never seen an app order surcharge on BK and I've been using it for 2 years plus. (Well unless it's a hidden surcharge. I've never actually compared the price in app to the price in restaurant.) I think I started using it a few months after they first introduced in app ordering so it must have been a very short time. Alternatively maybe it's only certain places. I've only ordered from 4 or so different outlets and non in the Auckland CBD or something like that. BTW, you don't have be near the restaurant to make an order. You can do it from many kilometres away. The map shows you nearby restaurants but let's you search or zoom out and zoom in. It's only checking in that you need to be close.

From my experience the BK app ordering mostly works, although occasionally has problems where it gets confused over your location and won't let you check in. Possibly it's also related to internet access since I don't always have data on my phone so have to rely on their wifi sometimes. Because it relies on GPS, I guess if you're at a place with very poor GPS you may have more problems although their range for check in seems quite high. I can check in from my home although I think it's at least 500 m 'as the crow flies' from the restaurant. The weird thing is despite this, I've been able to check in from home but then get to the restaurant and it's broken and I have to try and convince it to let me check in by killing the app and stuff. So I think there's some aspect of the app getting confused or broken. But I only have had this maybe 1 in 30 or more orders.

The big problem with the BK app is that it doesn't work after midnight, or at least it didn't last time I tried that and it was like that for over a year. This isn't unique to the in app ordering though. The other more minor problem is sometimes when you select a coupon but don't finish, it gets confused and you can't use that coupon anymore. Killing the app (this is on Android) and reopening it generally fixes this. Worst case scenario, try logging out and logging back in.

Also I did have a problem with one of the special Sundaes where the app said t wasn't available at the restaurant and wouldn't let be order it. But when I ordered from the restaurant, they did have. (I can't recall whether even their kiosks had a problem.) I assume that their staff can mark stuff as unavailable in their system and sometimes they may forget to remove this.

Oh should also mention that you need to make your order 30 minutes before the restaurant closes I think. Or at least with some restaurants. I assume this because they might no longer have whatever you're ordering. And there is no simple way to refund or cancel your order once you check in. Note that if you place your order before the 30 minutes then check in, it works although what you're going to do if they can't fulfill your order, that's more difficult.

        • About McDonald's app:

While I don't generally do it, mostly because I want to see if the staff is going to force me to redeem the coupon, you can probably redeem before they start taking your order, either when he person ahead of you is paying or when you see the staff member heading towards you to take your order. 3 minutes is a short time, but not that short. Exceptions would be very late at night when they sometimes seem to disappear for a long time before they actually take your order. Don't do it when you're like the 5th person in the queue of course. I suspect also that for everything except maybe the free stuff, complaining that took to long to take your order if that's what happened will also mean they just do it anyway without much fuss. (If it's one of the freebies maybe you'll need to put up a bit of a fight.)

Frankly the bigger problem for me is not the somewhat awkward redeeming experience, it's that you have to queue at the bloody counter, waiting for them to finally get to you after either disappearing for 5-10 minutes because they don't have enough staff. Or the person in front of you has never been to McDonald's before or something, so takes 5 minutes to order. (And most of the people aren't using coupons nor do they look like the sort of people confused by simple technology, so should be able to use the kiosks.) And given these, sometimes even just before midnight you can get queues for 3-5 people. Then there's also those staff who don't know how to do the coupon. And often it's some combination of these.

Also I suspect some of the coupons allow upgrades. I know for example with the meal deal ones you can upgrade to medium sized drink for 40 cent, and I think large for 80 cent. (Frozen drinks are free although same for size differences.) But I only know because one of the more helpful staff members asked me. I mean I could ask, but suspect most of their staff members will be confused and not be able to tell me. E.g. when I try to do the drink upgrade, some of them do have problems. I know with BK, it was only when they got in-app ordering that I realised what upgrades you can do with the points redemption meal, and the one time I tried with a staff member they didn't believe they could do it although to their credit they tried and did it without issue.

BTW McDonald's does have in app ordering in other places like Australia. AFAIK the app is fairly universal. So I suspect they just need to implement the back end and convince their franchisees to accept it. That said, I just read the experiences of someone in Australia who has had 3 or so orders get sent to the wrong outlet. It seems unlike BK you have to accept an automatic selection of restaurant. Admittedly I think this means that unlike BK when you have made an order but before you check in, you can effectively change restaurant. (With BK you select when making your order and need to cancel it if you change your mind.) Anyway, even though it tells you which restaurant before checking in, it someone manages to check in/send your order to the wrong one!

  • Said this above but since it's a very long post think most people will miss it. Note that with those combo/meal deals you can normally upgrade to a medium drink for 40 cents and I think large for 80 cents. (I've only done medium.) Changing from a normal soft drink to frozen is free although the sizes are the same. Don't know if you can do fries, I suspect if you can it's a fair amount more.

  • Think Wednesday may be a shake

    • Thanks

      • I think their POS machines actually have every day's deal, their staff have to select the right day. Saw this when I was buying a McChicken but only thing I was sure of was a shake seemed to be after the McChicken. I guess there's also posters like last year. Pity the deals still haven't leaked.

        • Yeah i'd prefer a list, I think it would be better if people knew what was coming.
