Was shopping at Bunnings Petone this morning and saw these clearance stickers going up. Some nice LED downlight kits down from around $30 each to under $10. Includes a whole shelf of DETA and some Arlec as well.

Pretty good, that's on par with AliExpress pricing. If I was in Wellington I'd swing by and replace all of my MR16 enclosures. Swapped them out for LEDs but a dedicated enclosure more efficiently disperses the light.

MR16s and GU10s are just the worst. They usually come in groups of like 6-8 lights for a medium size room that would be serviced fine by a couple regular fittings and still eat the full 50W each.

They were all $5 each in New Lynn, Auckland last week, should be sold out by now.

    • Aww, man. I think I'll go for a drive to Constellation/Glenfield soon.

  • Might check my store for these. Thanks for the heads up.

I have 6 I think of those old screw in reflector type lights around the house that will need concerting. Do these still have separate transformers for the 240v connection?

    • Got a few at Constellation. They run on 240v so have a built in rectifier.

I can see why they're clearing them now, they are 'hard'wired with a regular wall plug, you're supposed to have regular wall plugs in your ceiling to use them. You can see the plug in the picture.

It's easy to pull the case off and remove the wall plug but it's not intended (one way clips) and I've probably voided the warranty.

No one would have bought these regularly because no one has dedicated wall sockets above the ceiling.

They're made by the company that makes wall sockets (Deta), so the intent was likely to sell you both a light and a wall socket and laugh all the way to the bank.

      • Most of the downlights sold by Bunnings seem to have the flex with plug attached. I heard that's to get around the strict Australian rules. Should be easy to pull out the flex for those with separate LED drivers attached.

  • FWIW i've bought some mr16 led without the enclosure for $2 ea

Be careful of the insulation too. The latest ones you can insulate right over them. Some of the older ones you can't.

That didn't stop my certified electrician from putting insulation right on top of them… Even if the box was saying should be 15cm away.

With such certified morons around I'm sure most of people reading your post will do better job :)
