  • Oh wow, that's great. Much bigger than the 5.

  • Thanks for posting the deal! Any folks have experience with Amazon vs Google in terms of connectivity with NZ services/info and also compatibility with Xiaomi devices? Cheers!

    • Dont have experience with Amazon, but my Google Home mini works great with the Xiaomi Yeelights.

      • Thanks!

I have both the google and Amazon devices at home and i find the google assistant to be more responsive. Probably around 1sec or less faster in responding to commands. They both work decently well in NZ and compatibility with xiaomi I think it depends on what products you own. I could control the xiaomi yeelights fine but it doesnt work with the xiaomi wifi smart power adapters. If you want to know if its compatible with the xiaomi stuff you currently own, you just need to go and check on aliexpress or xiaomi site. It usually will tell you if its compatible with google/amazon hone assistant.

      • Hi thanks for taking the time to write that reply - that’s very helpful. I’m currently running Home Mini and agree that response times are great, but always intrigued to see if Amazon has matured in terms of integration with NZ services and compatibility with the Chinese automation stuff. For this price though I think it’s worth experimenting with even if it just becomes a ‘casual use smart device/weather station’. Thanks!

I also have both Google and Amazon at home, controlling multiple Xiaomi lights and power adaptors. Having used both ecosystems, I prefer Google as it is more responsive and have more sensible answers to my questions. I also cannot get my free Spotify to play on the Echo Dot, but it works really well on the Google devices.

  • So how do these things differ to a tablet with an app on it?

  • Great, Thanks. Just upgraded my 5 :-)

We went with Alexa over Google personally because for some reason Alexa is a lot better at understanding my wife / kids. With our Google Home about 25% of the time it wouldn't hear the "Hey Google" phrase but with our Sonos unit + Alexa it seems to hear them 95% of the time.

Also we use Apple Music so that works with Amazon and no Google AFAIK.

    • That’s great to hear! Thanks for the insights and sounds like the Apple ecosystem might tie in better with Alexa. Appreciate the feedback!

  • These were out of stock for a while but I had mine delivered on Friday, It's really good and a big improvement over the 5. Price seems to have gone up to $280 so this was a very good deal. Thanks for posting :-)
