1/2 Price Groceries at Countdown

100

This week there’s half price deals at countdown! My fav is the collective straight up unsweetened yoghurt! Great deals to be had.

  • It’s disappointing when the advertised deals arenimmediately out of stock, most of the 1/2 price items ordered on Monday were not fulfilled.
You can’t tell when an item’s out of stock either, you’ll get a call from a personal shopper rather than seeing accurate stock levels when ordering online

Yeah that would be frustrating and usually the way right! My local is pretty good at substituting though for something else / something better if that was the case for me.

      • hopefully yours is better than our one which substituted diet soda with regular soda

        • Haha oh dear.

  • Too bad the "was" prices are obviously inflated in most cases as is expected with 50% off promos.

    • Yes countdowns prices are higher in most cases but the half price brings it below a normal special price of even pns generally so I still think it’s good.

    • Yes, Countdown's prices just keep rising and rising. I used to think they were cheaper than New World but there's not a lot between them now, especially since Countdown stopped their price lockdown promotion.

Slightly OT, less than a year ago CD were doing a price lockdown ("permanently low prices forever" or some similar slogan) with 20 crusty rolls for $4 - 20c each. About 4 months ago they quietly dropped the price lockdown and this went up to 20 crusty rolls for $5 - 25c each. Last week they "dropped" the price to $4.50 but also reduced the quantity to 15 rolls - 30c each. That's a 50% increase in price for a food staple in less than 12 months.

Why don't the NZ press follow up on things like this? Price rises like this have a much greater impact on average peoples quality of life and cost of living than the price of the latest iPhone or Netflix subscription!

      Rant over.

They still do price lockdown. They just call it "great price"" now https://shop.countdown.co.nz/shop/products/greatprice . The Countdown Edam/Colby/Mild 1kg block is IMO a decent price. It recently went up to $9.50 from $8.99. However even Pak'n'save only has $8.99 rarely (or had?). It's not like a ~2 years ago where you could easily get $7.99. Their Essentials (former Homebrand) fries/chips are still $2.00 for a 1 kg bag, they gave up on the silly need to buy 2 for the price. That said, I've found their Essentials Fries/Chips aren't as good as most other brands, and they also don't have shoe-string.

Their Essentials frozen peas, green beans and mixed veges are still $2.30. (Well I think they were $2.29 before.) Some Pak'n'Save have their Value (former Budget) brand peas and mixed veges for $2.19. But I've never seen Value brand green beans. And the Pams and Watties etc are generally cheapest $2.50. (Very very rarely they are $2.00.) Their Essentials bread went up to $1.20 but Pak'n'Save Value did the same. And my Pak'n'Save only does their in store bread for $1.49 anyway (was $0.99 but they gave up on that).

I do agree with most items Countdown are more pricey or the same as Pak'n'Save. And even when the same, Countdown tend to have that price less often. (And are more expensive on average when not the cheapest.)

P.S. I'm thinking of Upper North Island or Auckland prices

  • Those Auntie Dai dumplings seem to be poorly stocked. Already on Tuesday Te Atatu South and Lincoln Road were running out (both had a bunch of vegetarian, one had 3 or so Pork and Coriander, another had maybe 6-8). By today, Henderson/Westcity and New Lynn only had a few vegetarian, Blockhouse Bay had a bunch of vegetarian and pork & coriander and Kelston had all 3 (including pork and garlic chives). Both Blockhouse Bay and Kelston had them in two places I assume due to the special. Didn't see that in any of the other stores, which is probably a factor.

BTW, if you are interested in dumplings, the vegetarian ones are worth a try if you aren't allergic to soy. (Well I suspect all 3 aren't suitable then.)

    • Small manufacturer, so they're probably struggling to meet demand.

I quite like the Sunshine ones, how do these compare?

  • Not a 1/2 price deal but I mentioned before that most Countdown X for $Y are normally minimum quantity X deals, in other words you can buy anything more than X and get the deal price. Just confirmed this applies to sweet corn, I expect all vegetables and fruit priced that way. (I don't buy vegetables much at Countdown.) My local had 5 sweetcorn for $3, bought 6 and it was $3.60 as expected. (It may be a little confusing on their machines since has a reduction.)
