I purchased something from the market website. From their terms it says that they are just the platform, and when I buy something, that transaction is between myself, and the merchant store that is selling the item. The markets terms say they make their money by charging a commission to the merchant. However the invoice I received is from the market, and not the merchant I purchased from. I expected the invoice to be from the merchant. So it appears the transaction is between myself and the market, and not between myself and the merchant, which is how I believe it should be according to their terms. I have asked them about this on online chat, and they said they would need to get back to me about it. When they got back to me, they didn't address this point, so I have referred it back to them and they have yet to reply. Anyone else come across this, as their terms and conditions seem to be different to how the transaction is occurring?

Given how disorganised they were when the site was launched (they still are), I doubt any of the front line customer service staff is able to address your concerns.
Thanks. Their online support is really quick at replying, but it isn't a standard question for them.
The reason why this is an issue for me, is that I could get a further discount if I purchased it through the merchant. eg If they provided me with a receipt from the merchant. But because the invoice comes from the market, who are therefore acting as the merchant instead, and it has the markets details and gst number on it, instead of the merchant I believed I was buying it from, I now don't get that discount.
Likewise, if I have a problem with the product, I should be able to go back to the merchant with it. But if I don't have a tax invoice from the merchant, I can't do that. I have to go back to the market to get it resolved, which isn't what the terms imply at all.
my First experience with them I didn’t get an invoice/gst receipt at all. Then I had to ask them for one and the initial response was no. Then after doing the talk to your supervisor bit they sent me their market gst number invoice. Not sure if something dodgy is occurring with them but I Shouldn’t have to fight to get what is required by law.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they get pinged by the commerce commission for omitting invoices or something similar.
I also wanted the invoice from the actual retailer supplying the goods as I was claiming a cash back, however it worked out in my case as I chose other retailer on the cash back site and uploaded the market invoice and it was accepted.I haven't bought anything for a few weeks but with my purchases the receipt was in the box (from the original seller)
Can't you just approach the seller and ask for a copy if you didn't get one? Thanks, I have, but initially they didn't reply to my email. I went onto online chat and they told me I would need to contact the market website about it, as they only deal with online order directly via their website.
HI NZMAX
I can confirm the sale is between the customer and the merchant. TheMarket branded packing slip in the packages is not an invoice (it's a packing slip), the actual GST receipt is on the email confirmation, this is presented by TheMarket on behalf of the merchant (a copy can be requested any time by emailing [email protected]).
Thanks !
TheMarket CS TeamThe tax invoice I received is from 'the market' and not the merchant. eg the GST number appears to be the markets GST number, and not the merchants. I am not sure what'presented by TheMarket on behalf of the merchant' means, as there is no reference to that on the invoice. I have purchased 2 things from 2 different stores and both invoices via email were from the market, both with the same GST number. So can we request a GST invoice from the actual merchant we purchased it from at any time, which shows we did infact buy it from that merchant? I have requested this but haven't had a reply. Someone was supposed to get back to me about this. At the moment, my invoice is from 'the market' so the transaction occurred between myself and the market, which contradicts with your terms and conditions, where it says the transaction should be between myself and the merchant.
If customers are dealing directly with the merchant (which the terms suggest), then how could they have had all those issues back in December with not being able to satisfy/cancelling orders saying there was no stock, when the merchants themselves online showed the stock as available?
Hi Letstaxthis
We had a couple of Merchants with stock data issues in December, which caused them to have a higher than expected cancellation rate (we actually cut them off from selling on TheMarket, but sadly a few more cancelations happened that we hoped for before we cut them off).
Hope you can understand as a new business this was not the intention and that we have learnt from that.
Thanks
TheMarket CS TeamLol, one of the merchants with lots of cancellations in December was The Warehouse… which owns themarket. They have actually not been cut off from selling on Themarket.
Hi All!
Hope we're having a great Monday.

Hope that clarifies.
Thanks !

These are the terms from their website. So I don't believe the invoice should ave come from the market, it should have come from the merchant that was selling the product through the market platform.

Introduction
TheMarket is a New Zealand-owned and operated online shopping platform (Platform). You can use our Platform to buy a wide range of products from third party retailers and suppliers (Merchants). We connect you to Merchants, who pay us a commission for each order you make on the Platform. While we operate the Platform, when you are buying products on it, you will be transacting directly with Merchants, and TheMarket is not a party to these transactions.
