Good for a weekend at least 👍🏻

  • What size is this? Why are they so cheap? Expire date?

  • The comapny in question closed for a week, produces something like 20% of condoms globally, they are now deemed essential and running near capacity again iirc. So there may be shortage but not drastic.

I think you're referring to Karex? Malaysia is a major manufacturer of condoms, like plenty of other latex products such as gloves. (Malaysia also makes big percentage of non latex disposal gloves.) A 'movement control order' was introduced on 18th March and it's somewhat similar to our level 4 lockdown. And as with us, the speed with which it was introduced meant details were still being worked out. (Also, the government had basically been in place for less than a month at the time due to a recent political upheaval.) So Karex closed down when the MCO was reintroduced. They did re-open but are still only operating at 50% of their workers (I assume to help ensure there is sufficient social distancing). And the earliest the MCO may end is 28 April after 2 extensions.

Before that, I believe some Chinese manufacturers were affected. They have now reopened and are ramping up production. However their ability to meet the demand in NZ and other similar countries may vary. Condoms are generally treated as medical devices and so as Hell Pizza found out, you cannot simply import condoms from random manufacturers and supply them. They need to meet certain standards and gain approval. While I'm sure plenty of Chinese manufactured condoms can meet those standards, if they don't already have approval well it's not normally a quick process and even with added urgency may still take a while. So a lot depends on how which condom lines already have approval for the NZ market.

India is also another major manufacturer. They are also under significant lockdown. I don't know how condom production there has been affected but I doubt it's completely unaffected. (India also has a massive population and has shown a strong willingness to limit exports to ensure they can meet domestic demand.) Thailand another manufacturer has also had partial lockdowns although it's possible these haven't had much of an effect on production there.

Separately, there's also the issue of supplies of the raw materials, and getting the condoms to their destination. Supply chains worldwide have been significantly affected. And of course, as per my earlier point, there will also likely be strong demand for these for disposal gloves. But tempered by the fact production of a lot of other things has been badly hit so there is probably lower demand.

Practically I don't think there will be significant shortages but there may be some more minor ones and I think it's impossible to entirely predict. I definitely wouldn't recommend hoarding, and especially hoarding for resale since thankfully marketplaces are surely going to prevent that anyway like they did for hand sanitiser etc.

See https://news.yahoo.com/virus-may-spark-devastating-global-co… and https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-malays… But also note the unspoken consideration. Karex is probably interested in relaxing limitations as much as they can, so playing up the risks may be in their interest.

You can get 144 condoms from the doctors for the cost of a prescription

    • Have never done that, did you just go to your gp and just ask for condom prescription?

    • +2

I can confirm that you can get 60 condoms from your GP with repeat prescription (for me I normally do 2-3 times).

So when I go to a GP I get this and then go to pharmacy that does free prescriptions.

Just note that the GP (for me) cost $60, however I have some health insurance that covers 70% of that cost.

      • How's the repeat prescription works? GP just give you a slip and you can go to pharmacy with the same slip within a year?

        • +1

My repeats are roughly every 2-3 months. All you need to do is call in and they can print you a new prescription or email to you and then you just go back to the Pharmacy. The guy below also mentioned about family planning which is also good. However when I go to the doctors I also do the following
          - Request for paracetamol
          - Request for IB profeen (can't spell)
          - Hayfever relief - Spray
          - Hayfever relief - Tablets
          - Condoms (mentioned above)

and get this on repeat for 2-3 times and it gives you enough hayfever relief and panadol/IB for the next couple of years at least.

          Cheers

      • Luckily AUT Doctors are free (for students)

      • Another option would just go to Familyplanning like Nil said, normally $35, $5 if u have community service card. Not sure can u just phone and ask for prescription.

I would say this is 53mm from what I see from other website, just mention this because I think people need to aware of the size before place order, wrong size condom would be a pain in the dick. Thump up for the deal!

  • Condoms are free at sexual health clinics and so are appointments. They just tell you to grab whatever you want.

  • lol, condoms used to come in 2 sizes. normal and giant. now there is normal and 3 different smaller sizes.

  • Thanks for the post nachos .

I didn't get any condoms but I got some lube and some baby bottles.
All my local supermarkets keep selling out of lubricant.
The baby bottles were cheaper than Farmers and free delivery.
