I've never understood why people need radars… just don't speed and save yourself $420??

People routinely go above 120km/h once out of town, it's near impossible to keep up with traffic by sticking to the speed limit.

    • or you CAN speed and save yourself thousands!

Because people are scumbags. Think they're better drivers than others, right up until they crash (and then they'll rationalise it afterwards. Not their fault, somehow).

About 100 of these particular scumbags cause fatal crashes in NZ every year - hopefully only killing themselves, but sometimes taking out an innocent. Killing self through idiocy? Unfortunate. Killing someone else through idiocy? Inexcusable.

If you're the type of person who uses a radar to save yourself some money while endangering the rest of us, (profanity) you.

      • I have to admit as a youngster I sped a little. Now that I'm a little older I drive super cautious. Always at the speed limit and if I have the option of traveling home on a 100km road or an 80km road I'll take the 80. I keep a 5 second rule when following other cars where practical an assume every other driver is a fkn idiot.
It's not easy driving the speed limit but it is alot safer and NZ drivers are notoriously crap.
It's great to see there are some with common sense!

  • I've owned 2 different radar detectors. A Valentine and a Cobra branded one. They were around the $400-600 price range from what i can remember.
I only put them on when I did long distance drives. They let you know when the popo is around hiding in the bushes =)
They do go off randomly when in CBD area due to picking up signals from garage doors or whatever I have no idea.
I guess it does its job but I've sold them off on Trademe since I realised I don't really need it as I don't speed anyways lol…

  • This model looks like its from 2016 so it could be a good idea to do some research into later models/brands

  • You need to be sure you can program it. To eliminate false alerts. The radar in question says it has X. That is not used here. Also you would want to be able to turn off or custom set K. That is used by speed camera vans, but also thousands of modern cars as crash or lane detection. Something like a valentine one allows you to turn off the bands that are not used in NZ and change the frequencies of those you interested in. Unless you can tweak these settings on your radar detector you will soon get frustrated that it is going off all the time for no reason. I have a 20 year old valentine one. ONLY goes off for Police. Ever. The latest valentine with bluetooth etc will set you back $1500 though. Second hand ones usually go for around the $500 mark. The radar here has no laser detection either. Not a deal breaker. A few Police cars here are equipped with it, and if you get hit with laser you are pretty much snapped anyway unless you can brake in milliseconds. But it can be interesting to have.

    • Thank you, this is quite helpful. Looks like I have a decent amount more to learn before committing a few hundred dollars
