Misfiring Engine and Surface Rust

What's the best way to go about fixing a misfiring engine and surface rust on a 2004 Toyota Allex?

  • Our Toyota Ipsum 1996 used to misfire very badly (to the point that the red catalytic converter icon lighted up when I was flooring the accelerator upon climbing a hill). Thought it was due to the ignition coils, but at the end it was fixed when we've got brand new spark plugs for the car. Whew.

  • A misfiring engine could be a number of issues. The first fix would be coils then plugs and if it's not one of those two well the list is huge including injectors, sensors, wiring. Is this from a check engine light? or just running rough? If it is just one cylinder misfiring swap the coil with another cylinder and see if the issue changes cylinder with the coil. You can do the same with the spark plugs. Good Luck

  • If going DIY, scan it with an OBDII scanner (starting from $2 NZD) then Google the error code(s). That should give you some place to start since, as other people have stated, it could be a wide range of things. Your local mechanic will have a good scanner as well but they'll probably want your business.
Surface rust is a pain in the ass to deal with; sanding, rust killing, bogging, priming, painting etc. It might be cheaper getting another panel from the wreckers if the rust isn't part of the superstructure (car will still likely be warrantable with panel rust).

  • Thanks everyone! It’s just running rough no engine light- I took it for a scan at super cheap auto and nothing came up, it’s the spark plugs - thanks again!
