Yeah, I backed originally in 2015 and they only really had something worth playing this year! Still a LONG way to go because of feature bloat unfortunately but there is a lot to do right now and we've had plenty of fun so far.
It's worth noting there are no subscription fees though, it's a one-off purchase. You CAN subscribe to a VIP type thing to get cosmetics and some ship discopunts AFAIK but it's not required at all (and I def. don't).

This game had such promise they raised a crazy amount of money far more than they needed to actually develop the game but then they charge the AAA price and subscription fees and the game is still not complete.. SMH
