  • This model is expensive for a phone with that MediaTek chip, they're usually in phones about 30-50% cheaper.

    • It's a rugged smartphone though so shouldn't be compared to standard smartphones. Assuming it's actually good quality, which I have no idea it doesn't seem that bad a price.

I had a quick look at PB Tech and found that for $375 you can get the Samsung Xcover 4s https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPHSAM213250/Samsung-Galaxy… has 3GB RAM, 32 GB ROM with an Exynos 7885 https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_xcover_4s-9730.php

For $870 you can get the Galaxy Xcover Pro https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPHSAM054200/Samsung-Galaxy… has 4GB RAM, 64 GB ROM with an Exynos 9611 https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_xcover_pro-10001.php

I didn't look that well but I think the CAT smart phones are similar.

From Antutu and Geekbench results, I think the MT6873 will outperform the Exynos 9611 https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/samsung-exynos-9611-vs… (although I'd look more carefully at other reports if it matters to you).

The big question is whether these really live up to the rugged promise. This phone is too new to have any real experience but it seems like Ulephone has been making similar phones for a while so you can probably find some real experiences with them, especially if you look around Russian sites etc.

The other big question is whether this phone is worth it compared to other options out there including other Ulephone Armour phones. I think a big selling point of this phone is 5G but frankly 5G is so new and limited in NZ that even given a reasonable lifespan of say 3 years for this phone you may not be missing much/care about not having it in 3 years. And you'd need to check out bands too.

You'd especially want to check the 3G and 4G bands although I had a quick look and think it's okay. (Notably I think 4G 28a/28b https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/97rn88m3 means it supports 28 and 28 has tended to be the key one that phones have missed.)

Of course for a rugged phone warranties may also be a big issue. But this is a complicated issue. AFAIK, similar to IP68 ratings and liquid damage etc, despite the rugged label most warranties still exclude impact damage etc given the complexities of deciding what sort of abuse they suffered. However I'd suggest that if you drop a rugged phone from pocket height onto a carpeted floor and it breaks and it's suffered no other substantial impacts, it's not living up to the rugged label. I.E. you have a reasonable CGA claim. I suspect given that, repairs under warranty can be more generous than they are elsewhere even without bringing up the CGA. But this isn't going to apply for a phone bought from Banggoods.

    • Dimensity 800 and 1000 are actually quite good chipsets on par with a mid range snapdragon
