Yeah a lot of people calling bullshit on that list, especially at r/EpicGamesPC. Was going to wait until the proper release before posting.
If it's real though, that has to be one of the best game-freebies lists ever assembled. Fingers crossed 🤞

  • Starting time should be Friday/December 18 0500 NZ time, and 0500 every day after that

    list seems too good

this list is hard to believe

    • Apparently half of these games aren't even in the store

      • Not uncommon with Epic Games giveaways especially from fancy developers AFAIK. E.g. GTA etc during their last sale giveaway all weren't I believe. From what I can tell, even Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity weren't. I actually sort of thought it was the case for most of their non repeating give-aways but I admit I've never paid much attention.

Speaking of GTA etc, I believe the last list was accurate. Well Ark was a week late, but that was either because the developers felt it was a bad time for celebration given what was going on then, or because they hadn't finished their new DLC. Doesn't mean this list will be but assuming it's the same leaker, they do seem to have some history of success.

        • Having looked slightly into release dates etc for those games, I'm thinking it could be accurate. Most of them are old enough that I could plausibly see them being free. Some of them are also DLC magnets i.e. the base game giveaway is partly about selling DLC like it was for 4 giveaways during their last major sale. Given the sheer number and in such a short space of time, it seems extreme but if those games were spread about over 6 months, I think people would be less surprised.

          • @Nil Einne: I find it a bit less believable. From these titles, AFAIK The Witcher 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, Assassins Creed Origins, Far Cry5, Fallout 4, Borderlands 3, Monster Hunter World, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Hitman 2 (and probably some others, but I'm not familiar with some titles) are all recent (post-2015), story-rich games that aren't heavily monetized.
Over the past 2 years, I'd say the 9 best giveaways (highest value) have been: Grand Theft Auto 5, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, Watch Dogs 2, Overcooked 2, Civilization 6, assassin's creed syndicate, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Batman Arkham trilogy + LEGO Batman trilogy, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

From the previous giveaways, I know that GTA V and Civilization 6 are heavily monetized games, while Yooka-Laylee, Mutant Year Zero, and LEGO Batman are niche and Overcooked 2 is an indie game.

Obviously, I'd love this list to be correct but you couldn't cherry-pick 15 games that were as big as these at the time of giveaway in the past 2+ years so I have my doubts.

            • @BJ: Borderlands 3 is an odd example for a 'not heavily monetised game'. Current price for DLCs on Steam are NZ$ 287.62. AFAIK Borderlands 2 was the same (see e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/truegaming/comments/b7xwbu/borderla…) as most looter type games are (I mean Destiny 2 went F2P on the base game!), although the Handsome Collection did include all the DLC.

Witcher 3 is CD Projekt who just released Cyberpunk, so plenty of room for cross promotion etc & dealing between Epic and CD Projekt (including perhaps GOG related). Frankly there were suggestions of Witcher 3 back in June

Note also while GTA is extremely monetised with GTA online, from all reports it was still selling very well. I imagine the earnings from monetisation dwarfed new sales, but still, I assume there must have been some reason why discounts were often so limited 5 years after release. It wonder if it was also a useful experiment for Rockstar and may have been part of the reason for RDR2 Online version.

To give an example, from a quick look at ITATD I see that from the US price on Steam; The Witcher 3, Mass Effect Andromeda (which is currently $3.99 on Origin), Assassin's Creed Origins (which was in a Humble Monthly back in 2019), Far Cry 5, Fallout 4, Hitman 2 (which was in Humble Choice this year) have all been cheaper than GTA V ever is on Steam. (Even if we consider other stores GTA 5 barring an odd price on GameBillet and if we discount the Epic Games giveaway, it's at most equivalent to the other games.) Some of them do have higher substantially higher regular prices than GTA but it's hard to say what that means for the value. I mean Assassin's Creed Origins is one of those with a high regular price but as I said it was also in a Humble Monthly over a year ago. The 2? EA titles are also I assume in EA Play Pro and I assume the Ubisoft ones in Ubisoft+.

IMO if we look at the history of giveaways, it was only really this year, especially with the mid year sale giveaways that we started to have recentish major studio games on Epic so I'm not sure if the previous years are much to go by.

True Borderlands 3 and Monster Hunter: World were about $5 more at their cheapest. Horizon Zero Dawn is even more extreme since it's never really had a significant sale. It's IMO one of the odd ones out as it was only released this year for the PC (even if 2017 for the PS4). But it's a complete edition on Steam. I wonder if they're going to split it into the base game and sell the DLC separately on Epic. Who knows. It's possible of course the list is partly right, partly wrong.

              • @Nil Einne: P.S. AFAIK generally when complete edition ports are made, the DLC content etc is integrated into the game without consideration of separating it so I don't think it's very likely especially since it sounds like the game is already a buggy PC port. But I guess it's one possibility for why a major work from a major studio that is less than 6 months old for PC (albeit 3++ year old in general) would be given away. It could also be some weirdness relating to Sony's PC porting strategy and tying up with Epic I guess. But yeah while I haven't looked into every game on the list, that's the one I'm questioning most of all at the moment.

                • @Nil Einne: Are you talking about Horizon Zero Dawn? I'm surprised it's a buggy mess - I know console ports often can be but this one has 96% positive reviews of ~3500 recent reviews on steam and I thought it had been a success. I suppose it could be possible Sony is funding it as I think they have a timed exclusive sequel to it.

Hopefully whatever happens with this giveaway doesn't lead to any more exclusivity of games, and if it does lets hope epic adds some much-needed features to its store.

              • @Nil Einne: Perhaps Borderlands 3 was a poor pick of a game that isn't heavily monetized. I haven't played it and tbh assumed given it was a $100 or so game on launch it was mostly complete. That's a fair point about cross-promoting new releases that I didn't think of.

GTA V probably wasn't the very most expensive game so far when given away (I think Civ 6 and Mutant Year Zero were newer when given away so they probably had the highest cost) but is arguably the biggest single giveaway epic has done so far. Based on the fact that GTA V was given away on epic, I'd believe any one of these games is in the giveaway but all 15 is a bit of a stretch

In terms of cost on ITAD when given away and games being bundled, I believe most of the 9 games in the upcoming giveaway I mentioned have lows of around $10-15USD give or take, comparable to GTA which was around $15 at the time. And yes, some games from both of my lists have been in Humble Monthly or other similar bundles, This tier of games is what you can expect as the main seller of things like Humble Monthly. With regard to Mass Effect, it doesn't appear to be that price but looks like it was 7 months ago?

It'd surprise me if the very recent releases are included, as games that recent don't typically get such deep discounts. It wouldn't surprise me if any one of the others are given away but for them all to be released at once seems unlikely.

Again, I hope I'm wrong and these games do go free as there's half a dozen I'd happily add to my backlog :')

    It’s bullshit

  • Aye Nachos, I started a new post for the 15 days here since you stated that the deal will be unpublished (not edited), if that turns out to be the case.

If you've changed your mind, let me know. Don't care if mine gets merged into this. Just keen on the freebies.
