Not the best rates on offer. Even with free fuel assuming 5L is around $10 I am still paying 10-20% less

We are out of contract recently, so I am looking at options right now.

To compare prices, I am doing this:

Z Electric: Spend $100, get 5L of fuel @ $2.08 per litre (local Z station per Gaspy - this can and will change of course, but more likely to go up than down!)

    So discount is about $10.40 on $100 = 10.4%?

$50 sign on bonus - is that 24 months? If so, for us that about $50 on 24 x $300 spend = 0.7% discount across the term.

Last time I looked, Contact (as an example - my current provider) was offering $150 sign on bonus, but if that is, say, 24 months, then really its more like $6.25 per month - for us, spending something like about $300 per month, that's around a 2% discount over the 24 months.

So to now consider the actual power rates, we would need to compare, say, Contact (to keep using them as an example) rates for our location less 2% discount, against Z Electric rates less (10.4% + 0.7% = 11.1%) discount?

My last bill from Contact was $214 inc GST (lower in summer - hence using $300 above as an average). That was for 818 kWh (Feb 2021 = 28 days), so about $0.26 per kWh. If I deduct the 2% that we got and presumably could get by re-signing (might have to argue, but let's assume for now) I get an implied rate of about $0.256 per kWh.

Z Electric are quoting me 22.11 c per kwH plus 219.29 c per day. If I use 818 kWh, I would get that bill to come to about $242.26 inc GST.

So for me, at least, it looks like Contact would be a better deal, even if I got no re-sign bonus.

I might be able to do better elsewhere, but just comparing Contact with Z Electric here.

Is that correct, or have I missed anything?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

Highly recommend checking it out with electric kiwi numbers.

  • I was offered 80L into my sharetank if I joined.

With Electrickiwi at the moment and only pay $50-$60 currently during the summer and about $70 in the winter with the 2 of us so it's not worth switching.

    • How’d you get offered 80L?

      • It just shows up as that offer on my Z app

      • I got an email from Z Electric (using the email address that Shell had many years ago, and Z therefore inherited - I have a domain I use, and a separate email address for each correspondent so I know where they got it), saying that I could get 80L of fuel if I signed up.

I don't think it is a code / voucher - just targeted at people they have in their database.

        Alan.

  • Taken directly from the website:

    No lock-ins. No exit-fees.
It doesn’t feel very neighbourly to lock you in to contracts or have exit fees. So we won’t!

    Does this mean no contract?

    • Interesting - you would still get the $50 sign on bonus?

If so, it would alter the calculations if you could be bothered switching again after a short period.

      • Keen to give this a go for the 80L fuel..

It is hard to beat Electric Kiwi when you make the most of their discounts:
    - Stay Ahead 200: bonus credit $20 everytime you top up your account $200
    - Hour of Power: if you shower/use washing machine during this time, can be 10-20% free power which you can track in the app
On my rough calculations, the Z electric fuel discount is about 10%, whereas you can have 10%+10% with Electric Kiwi (similar rates).

    • Did not know about the $20 credit with $200 top up.
      The more you know.

I'm with Electric Kiwi but I did not know about the Stay Ahead 200 plan. Something I need to look into! Cheers.
Also best to use the Electric Kiwi referral generator. Admin don't like people pushing their own referral codes on the forum.

        • It's the best plan. No credit card fees as well as the extra 10% bonus.

          • @Avatar: It's more like a 9% bonus, doesn't make a huge difference but pays to do the comparisons with the correct numbers.

A few notes for anyone considering Electric Kiwi:

          • The rates for the Stay Ahead 200 plan are marginally higher however work out the cheapest after taking into account the top-up bonus ($20 on each $200 top-up).
          • If you have a controlled hot water supply there is a single rate for all usage which is reported as a single value (take this into account in any calculations as controlled is not at a lower rate).
          • Hour of power is a one hour block between 9am-5pm or 9pm-7am and the start/finish time can be set in half hour increments (11:30pm-12:30am is not possible) via the app or website account dashboard.
          • Usage data is normally not available until late afternoon the following day, however hour of power must be manually updated each day before midnight (if you want to change it). This won't be a problem for some people however if you can't remember what time you did it, don't have an an obvious time to use it or just forget to change it before midnight then it can be inconvenient.
