No Annual Fees on Low Rate Mastercard Credit Card at Westpac

130

This card wasn't free until very recently.

Pros: Mastercard (some promotions require a Mastercard), no fees, low foreign exchange fees (1.4%)
Cons: No rewards

Might be worth getting one ready for one of those promotions that require a Mastercard (e.g. https://www.cheapies.nz/search/node/mastercard%20type%3Aozbd…)
or as a spare card dedicated for purchasing online from overseas.

  • Any good Mastercard deals around these days? Used to have Mastercard Wed deal with cinema.

I remember applying Kiwibank Mastercard Zero just for the sake of movie deals lol… And they switched provider to Visa. Gg

    • +1

Late last year/early this year they ran giftcard-back schemes for the Warehouse Group (TWH, NL, the market…) when using Mastercard, but those aren't regular occurrences

  • Is this a new product? How did you hear about it?

  • +2

I will recommend the TransferWise card for overseas purchase. Lower fees (~0.5%). You can make a new single-use card number for every transaction, in case your details are compromised you still stay safe.

    • Did know you can make single use card number, did you use it to shop online ex like Amazon / Aliexpress

      • +1

Never heard of this single use card safety feature - could you provide a link or details? I can’t seem to find anything on their website !

        TIA

It's a Virtual Visa feature. Lets you have up to virtual cards which are created on-demand and you can delete one if you need to and re-create another.

Does appear you have to get the actual transfer wise card now though to enable it.

      • @geoffgo - Works perfectly well for Aliexpress

  • Probably more important to Cheapies than there being no Annual Fee on the Westpac Low Rate Mastercard they are currently offering either balance transfers at 0% p.a. for 12 months or 5.95% p.a. for the life of the balance.

If you've unfortunately managed to build up a balance on another non Westpac card and can successfully apply for a Westpac card this deal can save you a small fortune Just remember to not spend on the card before or during the 0% period or you'll pay interest on those purchases until the full balance is cleared.

The offer currently ends on 10th May 2021 but may be extended (or withdrawn) at any time. I don't think there are any other 1 year 0% transfer cards in New Zealand at the moment.

Note also that this is not just for new card holders; it is open to existing card holders too. Does this warrant a separate deal being posted? I'm happy for someone to do so.

  • What are your thoughts amex platinum edge or platinum airpoints?

    • I could find some articles online but I didn't do my comparison. As the ultimate benefit it based on various factors value of points to $ redemption ratio, the additional reward benefit, can you waive off renewal fees, can you spending habit to built up the loyalty points and reap it's benefit.

    • This is a great card. $150 annual fee but you get a free return flight each year. With the rewards scheme too if you tailor your spending the points add up pretty quickly.

    • This article shows that the reward rate for the Edge is 0.75% yo 2.25%. If you fill up petrol at least once a month the best reward rate is the BNZ advantage visa platinum card 2.5%. It also comes with extra insurance like PriceGuard, extended warranty (in addition to overseas travel insurance).

  • Few days back there were rumours they want to exit NZ banking sector because of RBNZ guideline. What are your thoughts is it a good safe opportunity to do banking with them?

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/439034/westpac-nz-found-…

    • +1

Even if 'WestPac' exit NZ, they will still sell the existing WestPac NZ business to someone else - it won't just get shut down (worth more than NZ$10b, maybe a lot more).

You'd have to wonder if KiwiBank would be interested, for example.

It wouldn't worry me to start banking with them.

      Alan.

Anyway it's a credit card. If they go down isn't it good lol. Not that it will happen though.

      WestPac is not going anywhere.
