What would be the advantage of using something like this rather than sticking with Windows Defender+Malwarebytes scans now and again
If you're someone that uses a computer for general tasks and stays on the straight and narrow, that combo you mentioned should be fine. If you're someone that happens to end up in random pockets of the internet with popups galore and malicious software trying to get into your system, then perhaps an antivirus like Bitdefender or Kaspersky might suit better. I am novice when it comes to this sort of stuff though, so don't take my word as gospel.
Windows Defender is usually less effective with 0 day threats.
Also switch your DNS to Quad9 as their threat blocking is best in the industry.

Yes, you can hold it for few months. The license will start from the day you activate it. Hence, no worries there.
Alternatively, If you are already using a Total Security 5 Devices subscription, you can extend it with the new TS 5 Devices license.
This is a pretty good deal but just be sure to check the security tags on the site or use a limited value pre-loaded card. I purchased a similar thing from the same site 2 years ago and the next day my card was overdrawn with fraudulent transactions.
The bank was able to refund everything but it was a bit of a shock.
It was 2 years ago though so I'm sure the secureity has been updated since then.
