Cheap small TV?

Looking for a cheap small TV, around 24-32 inch. Doesn't have to be smart (we have Chromecast). Any deals? Thanks.

  • Thanks Wakrak. Had a Samsung and then a Panasonic, very good but they respectively broke after a year or so due to accidents (can claim on contents insurance but ours has $500 excess). This time I'll go for a cheap one. Which one is the best between Veon, Kogan and Konic?

  • I've had a look and most TVs in that size bracket are a pretty poor 1366x768 resolution. At minimum you'd want a 1920x1080 display, which is Full HD.

An alternative to a TV could be picking up a computer monitor with built-in speakers. You've then got a dual-purpose display - for example 1) a second monitor for a laptop during the day, and then 2) a TV with Chromecast in the evenings. One thing with that setup, however, is that the sound quality could leave a lot to be desired so would require a bit of review reading to find something that fits the bill. Here's a good deal at Dick Smith for a 2K 27" IPS monitor for $279.

    I'll keep looking! :)

    • Thanks, please keep looking. What are my options for using a computer monitor without built-in speaker?

      • Pretty limited when pairing with a Chromecast, I'm afraid. That is unless the monitor has a headphone jack, in which case you could plug a pair of speakers or headphones into it.

Have you had a look on TradeMe? There are a few Full HD TVs on there at a decent price. Some a bit older, however the picture you'll get from a slightly older Full HD TV is going to be better than a new 1366x768 HD TV. Here is a random listing I've picked out.

        • Thanks. Can I go to someone's house in the same city to pick up a TV under alert level 4?

          • @sunshinenz: Not entirely sure on the rules. But I believe no contact pickup/drop off is allowed. Similar to what courier does. You can't really enter another bubble i.e. can't enter the house.

Just make sure before you try something. Nowadays it's pretty easy to be targeted in all kinds of ways.. e.g. ending up on Tiktok lol.

          • @sunshinenz: lol no

you can for all intents and purposes but gummon

  • I would consider TCL as well if you are very close in price. Definitely better picture compare to kogan/Veon I believe.

    Something like
    https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/televisions/televisions/f…

Edit: 3 year warranty which is good

    • I like this option being NL (fairly reliable if there is a problem up front), plus a three year warranty (avoids arguments about CGA if within that timeframe).

Be aware that if you claim on the warranty, NL will likely point you at the manufacturer (not absolutely, but likely) which can be a hassle factor at least.

Having said that, most electronics fails within the first few weeks or lasts many years (if not subject to carelessness or straight accidental damage).

      Alan.

    • TCL have amazing build quality, not sure about the cheaper models but the 4k 55" I got last year was a full metal frame and rear housing. No backlight bleed and a perfect panel. Image quality was also superb, much better than both my Sony and Panasonic 40" ers.

  • Depends on:

    • How will the TV be used and how often (freeview tv? streaming/casting? gaming? bluray movies? music?)
    • Do you care about picture quality, contrast ratios and the like
    • Do you want built in smart tv netflix, youtube, tvnz on demand, spotify etc (I did note you have a chrome cast)
    • Will you be using the tv speakers or an external speaker system
    • What is your maximum budget?
    • Would you consider going up to 40"

Second what others have mentioned above, go full HD (1080p) if you can. A 720p screen will not have as crisp of an image as there are less pixels available to make up curved image edges. Although it seems that 1080p is rare within the sub 32" range these days…

My personal experience with Veon is that they are ok for the price as a spare room TV (mediocre colour, bad view angles) we picked up a 4k one on special at a whim a year or so ago and it was demoted within the first few weeks to a spare room unit. Build quality was also below average with noticeable backlight bleed out the back of the unit :/ they do have a 3yr warranty though. Not sure if you care about the speakers, but for the small time we used them before hooking up the sound system they were worse than worse.

Happy to help point you in the right direction if you respond to the above questions.

    • The TV will be mostly used on the weekend, or during 5-7pm ish during lockdown, as a spare one for a young kid, watching kids programmes on Netflix/Disney/Youtube.

I don't think we'll care so much about pic quality.

Max budget: $300 (spent $400-$500 on each of the last 2, given how long they lasted I don't want to spend that much again).

Prefer to have built-in speakers. We have a regular chrome cast and an ultra one, so don't worry about so much about built-in smart functions, especially given the budget.

40'' is too big. Lounge already has a 70'' top-of-the-range TV. We want to be able to move the small TV to the corner when the kid goes to bed (part of the reason why it's so prone to accidents).

      Thanks.

      • Ahh if its just a secondary TV for a kid to watch shows on and the price range is sub $300 then just go for what has the best (and most convenient) warranty. Those cheap tv's all use the same seconds LED panels and internal bits for the most part anyway, and will all have poor sound so its much of a muchness.

The Veon 24" $229 or 32" $277 at the warehouse which Wakrak found would probably tick the boxes for your use case, and be convenient to take in for a warranty given the prevalence of warehouse locations across the country (3-year warranty) Free shipping code FDREF66271 works too so that adds a bit of value as some places charge stupid amounts for shipping larger items like TV's

Otherwise second hand, you might be able to get something with better sound but you would need to negotiate lv.4 and/or high shipping fees for that.

Alternately if the sound needs a boost you could always buy a little $50 or so standalone bluetooth speaker and plug that into the tvs headphones slot (make sure the speaker supports that) and the bonus is you then have a Bluetooth speaker you can then take outside when working on the house/garden etc - Cant tell if the Veon has a headphones jack on it, the specs given are very limited sorry - so if you went with this idea other models with the jack might be more attractive, or ask the warehouse to confirm.

      • If it's for that purpose get the cheap veons you can find at The Warehouse, 3 year warranty.

They are not perfect, colour grading can be a bit iffy but for a young kids use they won't notice or care.

        • Thanks @Jaqqour and @Teckiwi. I thought about the Kogan options but your comments about warranty make sense, so Veon it is then. Annoying that this item is "non-essential" at TheMarket yet most other TVs are essential, and that same item is essential at the Warehouse. https://themarket.com/nz/p/veon-32-inch-hd-tv-vn32e202019/2-…

          • @sunshinenz: Yeah I saw that, odd given both are owned by The Warehouse Group lol.

You could be cheeky and ask via The Warehouse live chat for a pricematch(with the 5% discount)

            • @Dunno: They refused, saying they don't price match sister company. Weird, I've got Warehouse Stationery price match Noel Leeming before. Anyway, so now I'm torn between Kogan TV 24 inch for $149 (free shipping for the next day) and Veon TV 24 inch for around $200 ($229 but I can add a few items to cart to total $250 then $30 coupons)…

              • @sunshinenz: What are the benefits you would be getting for the extra $50 / 33% with the Veon?

One thing would be three year warranty vs (not sure for Kogan)?

                • @Alan6984: Ease of warranty (take to a Warehouse store instead of dealing online with Kogan) I guess. Kogan TV has 1 year warranty, so will need to resort to CGA if things go wrong later. I have no idea about the quality of either brand.

                  • @sunshinenz: Yep - I'm no expert, but I would say you are paying 33% more for a three year warranty.

Now, for me at least, I would say it would be reasonable to expect a $150 TV to last three years, so the CGA covers you that long anyway, and therefore the three year or one year warranty is really the same, but Kogan has no physical stores to go to, so maybe more hassle.

Having said that, you could argue that doing it all by email etc would be less hassle, and easier to reference the CGA if you need to :-)

                    Alan.

  • @sunshinenz currently $269 including delivery (FDREF66271) using the x3 new giveit codes.

    • Thanks. Still thinking about it actually. Last week (i.e. until yesterday) it was $277, subject to 5% discount on the market. Wondering if I can buy now and if there's a big sale in the next 2 months I can buy another one at the new price and return this one?? Has anyone ever tried doing that?
