Where to Buy Watches ?

Where do you get deals on watches ?
Starjewels/Starbuy is popular in OZbargain. Is that the best one for NZ too ?

  • Starbuy:

    How are the orders shipped?
All StarBuy orders are shipped with Australia Post. Australian shoppers can choose between a Standard or Express service. Both the standard and express services can be tracked online. Orders to NZ are shipped with Australia Post Registered International Parcel service. This service cannot be tracked online.

In the past I've looked on Amazon for watches, but obviously now that wouldn't be any good.

  • I bought my last watch 2 years ago from Starbuy and was impressed with the delivery time.
Am just waiting for DSE in Oz to have another sale for the Pebble for my next watch.

The following Trademe dealer from Rangiora (Canterbury) has half a dozen different watches on $1 auctions every Wednesday and Sunday. He appears to a professional watchmaker.

All watches sold are pre-serviced, tested for accuracy etc, and fitted with new batteries. His descriptions are very detailed and he provides numerous high quality photos of each watch. No pickups. 100% positive feedback with nearly 800 feedbacks. Often has some very unique, rare, and beautiful watches. Clearly loves his profession and his watches. All watches start at $1 but some go for $200 or more. Even if not in the market for a watch, it is a treat to examine his listings every week.

P.S. Recommend registering with BIDBUD if you use TradeMe regularly. Great free (3rd party) Trademe addon which vastly improves your trading experience. Offers a number of automatic bidding strategies, when buying. Provides a lot of additonal features which Trademe should but doesn't.

I can vouch for jomashop. Bought two watches. I haven't tried their returns system. They are authentic grey market sellers. If your item is over the gst threshold then pay the gst directly to jomashop as it's cheaper than getting a separate invoice from customs (i found out the hard way). Jomashop also has an ebay store however i bought directly from their website. Occasionally they have 20 dollar coupons but its only for watches over 250usd or something like that.

I've also bought a watch from massdrop.com. others have bought a watch from massdrop over the gst threshold and didn't get charged.

Creationwatches.com is also a popular store. People on the forums seem to think it's better than jomashop.

    • Curious about your observation, pay the GST directly to the supplier. How do you do that if it is an overseas supplier? Wouldn't you then need to show that they are passing that additional payment onto NZ gov?

Lots of big international sellers do it. Eg. Amazon and that ebay worldwide thing. It would be there responsibly to collect the tax on your behalf

  • Thanks Kiwijunglist, for introducing us to a new term, Grey Market Sellers. For others who may be unfamiliar with the expression, here are some references. In an increasingly better connected world, this type of merchandising will become more popular. So, in time, would also expect to see the GST thresholds lowered in an attempt to counter the trade or gain added tax profit from it.

Moderators: Is there any value in setting up a couple of extra sub-forums?

    • One for building lists of sellers for particular products, which folk have used or can share experience of.

    • Another one for sharing advice and tips on the actual 'craft' of buying for less. eg. GST thresholds on imports and how to manage them etc. The recent 'ticket splitting' is another example

We did originally have a large number of sub-forums, at least one for every category of deal, but it just looked very empty given the size of the user base. One option could be to either create a wiki page or a forum thread in place of a sub-forum. If it then becomes quite a popular topic/area, there is nothing stopping it being expanded to have it's own area.

One for building lists of sellers for particular products, which folk have used or can share experience of.

The thread/wiki page could titled something like "Best places to buy…?" Where a user can post what they are after, in terms of a particular item genre, and users can give feedback on that and recommend stores/post personal experience. We did have a "Find me a bargain" forum, reckon this would fit in there?

Again, probably best to have it's own thread/wiki page for now, something like "Tips and Tricks - The Craft of Saving Money" where users can post their own information.

      • Reckon it may be a two part process? A general discussion thread like this one to kick things off. Then as sites get mentioned and/or commented on, a Wiki entry aggregating that information into a simple list, with links back to the discussion for comments/questions.

Yea, can't see a problem with doing it that way. Feel free to organise it if you want to, or I can look at setting a couple of threads up next week.
