          • @Peter Wyngarde: There's the right way and the practical way 🤣

The right way is skinny should tell enable to move the date, the practical way is enable can probably just change it and tell skinny when it's gone live.

            • @Everettpsycho: Did you receive your Skinny Smart Modem today? Ours arrived earlier this morning.

              • @Peter Wyngarde: We did, talked to enable who have moved my activation forward to to tomorrow and submitted a termination request to stuff, seemingly can't be done on Monday due to labour day. Let's hope skinny sort the back end details out so it actually works tomorrow.

I have also emailed both stuff and skinny to advise I've had this changed over more than a week earlier than planned.

                • @Everettpsycho: If for whatever reason they cannot transfer the service they have a workaround whereby you have overlapping services. Assuming you have Stuff Fibre on ONT LAN port ETH1 they will activate Skinny Broadband on ONT LAN port ETH2.

              • @Peter Wyngarde: Had an online chat with skinny after work and they are all set, I'll be online tomorrow afternoon. Changed the WiFi password on the skinny router for my smart devices so should just be a swap out tomorrow afternoon to be up and running.

                • @Everettpsycho: Fingers crossed the changeover goes as planned. Do you keep the same Wi-Fi Name (SSID) when you change routers?

                  • @Peter Wyngarde: You can if you set it up with the same said and password, my main routers only running some smart lights anyway and my actual WiFi is run by a mesh in bridge mode so I won't have to reconfigure that at all just plus it in to the new router.

  • Vodafone offered $53per month and $200 credit for the HFC max plan. Its their cable plan but speeds are similar to the skinny ultra/max.

    • Not bad. If you spread the $200 over 12 months, brings it down to $36.34 approx.

  • How far away can the connection date be set in the sign up form? I'd rather not enter all my details only to find out I can't pick a suitable date.

(My current contract (with Stuff) finishes end of November, so I'd need to set a transfer date late December so that I can cancel the Stuff plan after the contract ends. Otherwise I expect they'd charge me for December anyway, or charge a termination fee as I'd technically be cancelling before the contract ends.)

    • Others in the comments said 2 months, one even got it til Feb 22 so YMMV

      • I did see those comments about contacting support with mixed results. I asked about the sign up form specifically because I think that's a good indication of a period that would always be accepted, and isn't at the discretion of a support rep. :)

        • Just a reminder to check if you're on Stuff's legacy pricing of $85/month as all other ISP's are now $95+ /month for gigabit

        • My reply to your first comment went to next page. Anyway you should be okay to transfer in November.

          • +1

@Peter Wyngarde: Thanks for mentioning that. Stuff Fibre support confirmed that I can transfer within the last month of my contract term without being charged the disconnection fee. :)

  • +1

Confirm with Support Team at Stuff Fibre my understanding is correct. You can cancel/transfer to new fibre service provider on last day of fixed period contract and exit fee doesn't apply. You don't need to stay and cancel/transfer in 13th or 25th month to avoid $99 or $240 exit fee.

    • My stuff fibre contract will finish next Feb but I am thinking about breaking it….

      • Are you currently in month 7 of 12 month contract? What's your billing date each month?

        • 7 or 8? not too sure about it. My billing day is on 2nd of the month so I got about a week to break it.

          • @metalmickey: Contact their online chat and ask what the last day of your fixed-term contract is.

I did that a few months ago so as to time our transfer to Slingshots 'Free for Six Months' offer for 'frontline workers'.

            Alan.

            • @Alan6984: will do 😆

              • +1

@metalmickey: You can also find by logging into your Stuff Fibre Dashboard and selecting My Setup > Services > Current Services. Here's an example for someone I setup on 13th August 2021.

                Fibre
                $39.98 /MO
                Term Ending 12th Aug 2022

    • Hi Peter. I just joined staff fibre on 07 October. Are you saying I can switch to skinny without exit fee? Thanks

      • +1

Stuff Fibre 30 Day Money Back Guarantee
The team at Stuff Fibre are so confident our customers will love our service that we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. If for any reason, you are dissatisfied with our service and choose to leave us within 30 days of your fibre service being connected we will refund your first month’s charges in full.

        What you need to know:
        (1) To trigger the refund you need to contact our support team either by emailing us at [email protected] or you can call us on 0800 862 337 and terminate your Stuff Fibre services within the 30 day period.
        (2) We will then credit you back your first month’s charges to the Payment Method you provided us at sign up.
        (3) If you opted for our base Gigabit Router at sign up then when you contact our support team to terminate your service please let us know if you wish to keep or return the router to us and in each case our Fibre Terms will continue to apply.
        (4) Otherwise the Stuff Fibre terms and policies will continue to apply as normal.

        • Thanks. I am aware of this but feel a bit bad to switch if there is actually nothing wrong with the service. Do yoh know if skinny broadband is good?

          • +1

@Superpower21: The only other out without incurring the exit fee is when they increase prices during the fixed period contract. You are given the options of staying with the increased service fee or leaving with exit fee waived.

Assuming you're on the 6 month half price 12 month fixed price contract it's cheaper to exit at end of 6th month with $99 exit fee than stay unless you get free months from referrals.

I haven't been with Skinny Broadband before. Our household has basic requirements so hopefully no problems from scheduled transfer on 31st October. I'm hoping the new Skinny Smart Modem will resolve some issues with the old Vodafone Ultra Hub.

  • This Skinny modem has quite a nice simple look to it. Hopefully I don’t have to pull it apart like I did the (Slingshot) Netcomm NF18ACV just to put tape over the lights. Felt like the Green Lantern was sleeping in my living room.

  • Anyone else having trouble getting any response? I signed up on the monday, they took my $10, sent me an email, i responded, then sunday sent me the same email, i responded again, tried fb messenger, nothing. I have had to keep ringing my current provider and asking them to extend my service as skinny has not sent me a modem or connected me on my connection date (monday)

    • Signed-up on 18th. Picked-up on 20th. Delivered on 21st.

    • Have you got your modem yet? I signed up on 29th October, but still waiting for the modem. Contacted them, they said the modem has be processed on 29th with courier post but they haven't allocate a track & trace number because they have been too busy. I have no internet since this morning (which the switching suppose to happen at 6am). Wondering if it's possible to pick one up from their office in Auckland on Monday?

      • Can't you just connect using any modem / router that you have lying around?

I'm not with Skinny right now, so not sure if they do something different to most other ISPs currently.

        Alan.

        • I just checked with them, apparently I need their router to connect. I switched from Vodafone to stuff in early October and only needed the password to access internet before router arrived. So I am not sure why this is not working as the same way before.

      • Yeah i rang them and they sorted it out, i dnt suggest emailing or messaging them, waste of time

        • Thanks. I called them this morning and got cut off in the middle of the conversation. So used the online chat again. No internet for the weekend is bad.

  • Anyone else moving from stuff received their bag to return their router yet?

Bizarrely mine has come and it's all orcon branded telling me about fees for routers I wasn't issued. I do have one of the routers listed from my time with orcon and in very tempted to send that back and see what they say. It matches does match the paperwork they sent me requesting it be returned.

    • I had mine (changed to Slingshot at the start of Oct 2021).

There was no branding on the 'letter' - maybe there was on the courier bag, but I didn't notice.

The 'letter' was just a pre-printed sheet (nothing specific to me) that had 'Stuff Fibre' at the top and bottom. It did not explicitly mention the model of router that I had, just referred to 'the router'.

      Alan.

      • Mines got orcon stamped all over it and explicitly states the orcon router selection with prices for keeping them including Google WiFi and orcons hyperfibre routers. It's a generic letter just not expected. I was on the fence about keeping hold of the Asus router so might pop an old orcon router back to them as I somehow have 2 of the damn things anyway, if they bill me I was willing to pay it but if they don't it's a result. Either way they are receiving what the paperwork they sent asked for.

        • Mine was an Asus too (RT-AC59U V2 if I recall correctly) for which they wanted $90 (presumably including GST).

It wasn't the worst piece of kit I've ever received from an ISP, but not a unit I would recommend purchasing for $90, so I was happy to 'sell it' to Stuff-Fibre for that price :-)

Personally, I think someone at Stuff-Fibre is a fool and should have made a realistic offer, but that's up to them.

          Alan.

          • @Alan6984: I've only got the older AC58 as well. It's just been a reliable work horse and I did use the Vpn server on it from time to time which is nice to have that the skinny routers don't do and the remote monitoring is handy. Is it worth $90, maybe not but the convenience of it already being set up is handy. Will chuck it back in tonight and see if it at least works. I could make another VPN on an old pc but the Asus just made it really simple which was good enough for my very light usage of it.

            • @Everettpsycho: I have no idea whether the VPN implementation on the AC58s is secure or not - I've only used OpenVPN in the last fifteen years or so (hard to remember how long now - might be more) as it has always been fairly solid, it is so widely used that the general risk of anything significant being unknown is very low, and it is updated regularly.

I am generally a bit leery about updating the firmware on ISP routers (just in case it introduces instability or even bricks), but since I only use the ISPs router as the connection to the ONT, and I have my own router inside of that, I tend to be relaxed about leaving the firmware alone.

I figured I'd sell the Asus to Stuff-Fbire for $90 and put it towards a new one when I need it.

I do understand the attraction of convenience though!

Be aware that, if you change the router, there is a reasonable chance that when you re-connect you'll get a new IP (even if you then immediately put the original router back in - it can vary!)

If you aren't running any services accessible from outside, then no big deal, but if you are, even if using some kind of dynamic DNS, there might be a period of downtime until things propogate, and if your records have longer TTLs that could be a day or sometimes even longer if you are unlucky. If you are, and you have access to the TTLs of your DNS records (especially if you host for yourself) then I'd change the TTLs to five mins a few days out, then do the swap, and if all okay, put them back to whatever you prefer once things have settled.

              Alan.

              • @Alan6984: Right now since switching over I've not done anything with the dns. I'm the old router I used Asus dynamic DNS to get to the VPN but that's about the only thing I used it for. I believe I did use the openvpn option on the routers server but no idea how up to date that is.

It's not overly common I use it at the moment, I just had tasker autoconnect to it when on any WiFi network that wasn't my own. I could just use Nord or surfshark to do that instead from a security standpoint, but occasionally I have used it to pretend to be at home to access some devices. It's not the fastest server but it gets the job done in a pinch so it's nice to have that option available.

I could just return it as you say and put money towards a better router. I don't even use the WiFi on the skinny router properly and just have the 2.4ghz feeding smart devices only as I'm running a mesh in bridge mode for the high usage kit. If I had an ac59 I'd probably keep hold of it and use it for the ai mesh feature paired with a better primary router, but annoyingly they only gave me a 58 when I joined.

                • @Everettpsycho: Pity we couldn't have swapped!

I never used the mesh functionality on the AC59 and I believe they value both at $90 (probably they just that amount across the board for any router they supply).

I am lucky that when Chorus installed the ONT, we got it in the very middle of the house, so I can have all my routers / etc in the same location as the ONT, and WiFi is good throughout with a single unit.

                  Alan.

                  • @Alan6984: I'm really just using the mesh as access points with wired backhaul. It's overkill really but just means I get better coverage at each end of the house. I probably could do with just the one router centrally and have arranged lots of cat6 cabling in our new house to put it wherever I like but I kind of like forcing the smart home stuff on to it's own 2.4g network off the main router meaning the mesh is just flat out speed for actually portable devices. Most things I have are wired in anyway including my Google home minis so the WiFi regularly hits 400Mb with this set up.

                    • @Everettpsycho: Completely agree.

To be honest, I have never understood why any house built since the nineties does not have ethernet cabling everywhere. We have that, and it makes things so simple and 900 MBit downloads everywhere :-)

The cost of putting it in alongside the electrical cables would be negligible (before the dry-wall even went up), and it would make the house so much more functional for a modern age, but for some reason, it is quite rare.

                      Alan.

                      • @Alan6984: Our sparky wanted to put in 1 cable to the study and one to the living room. We spent a fair bit upping that to two cables to every room to at least put any TV video equipment and the study in wires.

They seem to think WiFi is the solution but have no real idea about how WiFi works and why cables just work better. You'd think they'd want to cable it as they make profit on each one installed.

                        • @Everettpsycho: Yes! You'd think every sparky would be saying, 'Do you want ethernet with that?'

  • Skinny website is showing 4G unlimited is not available in my location, does that mean the capacity is at peak already ?

Also the referral link - how does that work?

    • Where on their website?

You can get a referral link from this site, and enter it when you switch to Skinny. I did that previously - can't recall what I got as a new user off the top of my head though (might have been 5GB of free data but not sure).

      Alan.

      • Just run through the 4G unlimited sign up process , check to see if its greyed out in your area

    • yes if it is not available it is is either at peak or out of range.

the referral is only for mobile, there is no referral for broadband

      • yes, one of the reasons I wouldn't go 4G
Imagine at Peak times or outage , no back up

        • Agreed - I have 4G as my backup!

          • @Alan6984: So you paying twice or are you hotspotting?

            • @Joe: I mean I have fibre, and if that ever went down, I would use my 4G (including hotspot) as a backup.

I would not want to just rely on 4G as a primary internet connection myself although I'm sure many do. For starters, as far as I know, all mobile data providers give you a CGNAT address, so you can't have any incoming connections - would not work for me at all.

  • Just got connected on Friday with 100mbps plan, and when I just checked the dashboard now the 300mbps plan is the same price so switched to that.

    • I just signed up on 10th November too, just wondering if it's possible to get a free upgrade to 300mbps since its the same price?

      • My thoughts exactly, I dont see why not. According to other comments above you can even start on the 1000mbps plan for free and change down after 6 months to a cheaper one.

      • +1

Well that was quick, I now have 300mbps speed (320mbps/110mbps via fast.com)

        • Did you talk to them? I just logged into my account and changed the plan there.

  • Has anyone performed any speed tests, comparing previous provide to Skinny or just just buying it cos its cheap?
    Vodafone 100
upload download were close to 90

    Skinny 44/40

    Half price half service

    • How are you testing (wifi vs ethernet) & do you have another modem you can test on?

I went from Slingshot 100/20 to Skinny Ultra Fibre (900/500?) so it’s difficult for me to make a comparison. I’m using my old Slingshot modem.

      • Will the vodafone modemm work on Skinny network?
Do you know what changes are required network wise ?

        • Mine did it automatically.

Some of the comments in this thread might be useful:

          https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=290…

          • @Wakrak: Thanks, So you reckon VF modem is better than Skinny Smart ?
Atleast that way I can retain VF TV.

            • @Joe: Not sure eh. I just couldn’t be bothered adjusting the settings in the new modem. Easier for me to just keep using the Slingshot Netcomm modem.

  • Switch went like a dream- from VF to Skinny exactly last day of the billing cycle.

Would have been even better if it was like power companies switch, with no modem changeover, it just should work with Zero downtime :)

I really liked the VF TV interface than my Samsung V

Can the VF moem work on Skinny ( although looks can be deceiving, with a small modem, Skinnys Smart has a better signal dbm

  • I successfully switched over from Stuff Fibre. I have a Fritzbox 7490 set up in mesh so really didn't want to change my router to their one.
I managed to switch it over successfully. If anyone needed guidance on this specific model PM me and I might be able to help.

  • Has anyone’s broadbandunlimited dashboard moved on from the “it looks like we haven’t got your connection up and running yet” screen? (Below your credit cart details).

    Screenshot

I’ve been connected for about two weeks now.

  • My dashboard still hasn't changed. Here's hoping they give me free internet for life.
