Broadband Providers Who Do a Price Match for Customers about to Leave Them

I'm wondering if its worth calling up my current provider - Spark - and seeing what they can do for me based on deals available from other providers. Has anybody ever been offered a price-match deal by Spark? Or any other provider for that matter?

I saw a comment online once, where someone mentioned they had managed to get a discount from Vodafone after calling up…

spark has done it for me, they might try to force you to sign a contract

    • That's great to hear! Thanks. What kind of a discount did you get, if you don't me asking of course?

      • from memory it was $10 discount per month

  • Last time I left Spark, they called me (after it was too late) to ask we why I hadn't called to see if they could do a better deal, so they don't even really hide the fact. Obviously they won't be interested if you're under contract still.

Ask to talk to the "Retentions Team".

Used to work there until very recently. Spark. Removed their retention teams and toolkits. They used to have rolling save credits that applied. Used to have people contact to. Readd annually. Made for a lot of Escalations when they were taken away. As one of the leaders who took Escalations even we had nothing to work with except right planning to make sure you were on the right plans for you. Every now and again they have a promo on a particular plan you can add with the system adding the promo pricing but the adviser themselves doesn't have a lot to work with lately.
No harm in trying in case plans have altered or there's a promo. But "Save" the retention team are dead and gone.

    • Thank you for sharing! That's really useful to know

  • Stuff fibre were not interested in dealing 5 months ago, they basiclly said FIFO, fit in with our plan or eff off….

    • I had the same experience.

I talked to them, but they were not willing (or able) to do anything to keep me when my term came to its end.

I was quite happy their service, but all bits are the same as long as they get through, so I wasn't willing to actually pay Stuff-Fibre for the pleasure of staying with them, so I jumped ship for the best deal I could get on the day.

      Alan.

    • I emailed Stuff last month a few days after the '6 months free' Skinny promo was posted here on Cheapies. While they wouldn't match the Skinny promo, they did offer me the current new user deal (6 months half price at $95/mth on a 12 month contract).

2 degrees will usually do something for you if you sign up to contract again.

I got the discounted rate and prime video but wouldn't give me the cash bonus.

It was pretty unlikely that I would jump ship because I am using the $10 monthly discount for having a phone plan and they are also giving me a fixed IP (no cgnat) complimentary which they usually charge $10 for.

    • I got good deals with 2d too. Even managed to extend the amazon prime video for the second year, on top of the free IPv4. Soon my contract is coming to an end, so I have to call them and try to get a good offer/extend prime video, etc.

  • I too am with 2degrees and after about 4 months of not being on a plan (existing customer and contract ended) I called to ask for the plan being offered to new customers which was 75 per month (unlimited fibre, amazon prime and 100 joining credit) I ended up speaking with multiple people and ended up only getting 75 month plan for 12 months. When I later called back to ask about joining credit and amazon prime I was told (calls were listened too) that because I didn't specifically ask for the joining credit and amazon prime I was only given the discount rate of 75 per month.. So heads up for existing customers whose contract has recently ended and you are now looking to sign to a new plan you will need to ask for all things that are available to new customers

  • Voda refused and just insisted i went to wireless broadband which dont work where they are.
No price moment at all for the elderly

Spark don't do anything anymore as far as I'm aware - Recently approached them regarding getting a better deal for 4 services on my account and the person tried saying other providers offer a poor service and offered to disconnect my services for me.

    • Thanks, that's good to know. I saw they released their new plans recently - for me it's the same internet for $5 cheaper, and Netflix now fully included (worth 18.50), so its now the best priced recurring deal out there for me anyway. Maybe that's why they're so resistant to individual deals now - same thing with Spotify being included/subsidised with a lot of their mobile plans, and the Data Stack loyalty data too.

The only thing is if I wanted to jump to Skinny and back again in 6 months to get the Skinny signup bonus. But don't think I can risk a period of no internet during lockdown tbh, on top of the hassle. And surely Skinny will offer a similar deal at some point in the future when I might actually want to change more permanently

      • I just signed up with skinny on 29th October and they said I would be connected on 5th November on their website. BUT due to the courier post delay, the modem didn't arrive until today. So no Internet for 6 days which is first World problem during lockdown. Used online chats, emails and phone calls, always had same answer, courier post delay without tracking number, and they couldn't do anything about it. It has been a really stressful process for me. So if you do want to switch, please allow 2 weeks just so you don't need to go through what I have been through.

        • Without tracking number is BS. All parcel items get tracked unless it wasn't nzpost

          • @Foodie: All skinny said was courier post has been too busy and hasn't allocated the tracking number and they promised. to update me with the tracking details. But somehow the modem magically showed up this afternoon. It was delivered by courier post.

              @Superpower21: Probably covering for themselves.
Sure couriers are busy but tracking numbers get auto generated and higher volume senders even print their own legit tracking courier post numbers.

    • Indeed, longtime Telecom/Spark user and they didn't even try retain me.

However, recently cancelled by paper subscription and spent 30 mins on the phone with the CSR trying to negotiate with me.
