American Express: Get Reimbursed for Each Cent You Spend up to $150

110

Targeted offer. But I just got my wife, who was not eligible, to call American Express and quote 'Platinum'. The agent was quite happy to add the offer to her card manually as well.

For those who also have the 'online grocery' offer and shop at countdown.co.nz, you won't be able to get credit for both offers at the same time. Not sure which offer has the higher priority though.

  • I am a bit confused. How much do you need to spend to get $150 back? So if I have the online grocery promo on my card, I won't be eligible for this one? How come we don't get email about the promotions anymore? How did you find out about this one please? Sorry, lots of questions.

  • I was confused initially too. Then I called up and they explained that, unlike the other offers which are 'spend xx and get yy back', this offer pretty much reimburses you every cent you spend up to $150. Does that make sense? We have enrolled both 'online grocery' and 'Platinum', not sure which offer has the higher priority.

    • So you actually received the email for this one and got your wife to enroll as well?

  • What is the percentage value of all the participating store for credit back? Can't seem to find it on the offer link.

  • They perhaps do offers like these in batches of card numbers as I got this a couple months ago

  • So if I call amex and quote platinum they will. Offer this to me? The amex offer the staff couldn't apply any offers from what the comments were saying

Hello, it depends on the staff member you talk to. Some will say they cannot, but some go the extra mile to help you and get the offer to your cars. Sometimes, you'll need to talk to multiple people before someone can add the offer to your card.

      Thank you.

  • I spend like.. probably $1000 a week on my American Express (But I always have it in Credit)

Have never been offered an offer heh.

    • the less you use, the more offers you get.

      • I have Platinum master card and Mastercard. Get 1.5 and 1 Hotpoint respectively.
They don't change me an fees

Am I better of with American express?

        • +1

Depends on how much you spend a year… but most likely you will be worse off with Amex since it will take a lot of purchases to make up for the annual fees alone.

        • +1

I guess if you get Platinum Edge is not too bad as it gives you a domestic return airfare anywhere in NZ, pretty much covers the annual fee of $149. My card fee is a lot higher but I definitely see the value of Amex card and got almost triple of the value (cash rebate alone) of my fee back this year, plus I earn so many points I can redeem airfares once we can trace again, so I am very happy with them.

This like many Amex offers this one is targeted as just rang and the person I spoke to said I wasn't eligible.

  • So if you buy something for $150 from say Harvey Norman, it will be effectively free?

    • Yep, you'll be refunded up to the first $150 so it would be free!

  • +1

Enrolled successfully over the phone just now. Thank you!

    • what did you say to them on the phone? and what Amex card do you have?

      • +2

Platinum Edge. Called yesterday for the "online grocery" and today for this "platinum" offer. I basically asked them if there is any offers under my card. initially they will say you can look it up online, just say there is no such function for NZ cardmembers (this is true).

They may ask what offers you are referring to. Currently there are "Online Grocery", "Platinum and "BP". Hope this helps.

        • Just called and Amex said this is only available for Platinum charge card. So maybe they do look at the spending power to offer you the promotion?

          • @Superpower21: That's strange. many people on Cheapies reported are non-charge cards. Perhaps call again?

            • +1

@zqsn: Hey, even though they say it's only for Platinum card holders, it's not restricted to just them. An as Airpoints Card Member, I was eligible. For these things, you just need to call again and again and quote 'More Value from Platinum Amex Offer' until someone adds you. Even though I was downvoted to oblivion when I said it for my post about the BP offer, it's still true and downvoting me won't change that truth! Sometimes the good things take a bit of effort.

              Thank you.

  • Not eligible unfortunately.

    • Which amex card do you have?

  • is my basic airpoints card eligible?

  • Not eligible either. I have Airpoints Platinum.

    • +1

My wife and I have the same cards as yours. Did you quote 'Platinum offer'?

      • Yeah. I asked if there were any applicable offers, he said they were listed online. I said there are none listed. He said there are none available for my card. I asked him about the Platinum offer and he said offers are specific to cardholders, not everyone is eligible.

        • +1

I believe that's a generic answer. If you have time, try calling them again and see if you can talk to another agent who's willing to help. I got my card added to the 'BP NZ' offer a few days ago even I wasn't eligible. For the free $150 credit, I think it's worth the effort.

          • @xsolider: Well it was a battle but got there in the end. Thanks for the encouragement haha

        • Yep exact same thing I got when I tried calling (Tried 3 times with 3 diff people!)

  • Has anyone gotten $150 back with $150 spend

    • Spent $102 on the 16th and received $102 credit on the 18th. It allows multiple transactions.

      • Wow, so it's a full credit on the amount you spent. Essentially free $150

        • Yes, that's why I think it's worth calling them a few times until they add the offer to your card in the end. But my wife got added in one call which was quite lucky.

          • @xsolider: So worth it, under rated deal!
Have called, and essentially added all 3 deals - platinum, online grocery, BP offer deal with my first call = total potential savings of $240
            thanks OP!

Thanks! Enrolled in this and the online grocery offer. The BP one is full unfortunately. It took a few tries but there was one customer service rep online who sussed out both my partner's and my cards (airpoints). Great deal!

    • So did you do it via the live chat?

    • Thanks, enrolled in this and the online grocery offer via Live Chat as well and on the first try! Yes, seems live chat agents are able to do it as well, just a matter of getting someone who is helpful :)

And it was for the standard Airpoints card too, not platinum

      • Had 2 live chat agents say it was only for the platinum charge card, so I called instead and managed to get it loaded.

  • Does this offer only apply to the main cardholder or can supplementry cardholder qualify too?

    • Tried to get them to add it to my supplementary card as well, but they said the terms & conditions excludes supplementary/additional cards :/ Not sure if anyone has successfully added the offer to supplementary cards

      • I would imagine this one is definitely for the main cardholder only as it's free $150 credit back to your account. But maybe someone else has successfully added BP and online grocery offers to the supplementary cards?

  • Finally got this added to my card after one live chat and 5 phonecalls over the last couple of days. I recognized the voice as the guy that did my grocery offer as soon as he answered I felt relief that it would be sorted. Some were saying it is only for platinium cards and others said it was not possible to add so possibly they just don't know how as this guy did it without question.

    • Yes, I suspect that it's not a common practice to manually add offers to cards. Lots of agents don't even know it's technically possible at all. When I called up earlier for the BP offer, I was turned down a few times with 'it's not possible to manually add it'.

Yeah I wish NZ Amex apps/sites were more like AU's where promos are display accordingly once logged in. We need Amex on ApplePay as well.

        • Yeah agreed! I’ve kept giving this feedback to them; I think others have been too but they don’t seem interested in doing it sadly. They just say that Apple Pay is ‘in the works’ but they don’t have an approximate date/month.

  • Thanks OP. I called again and successfully added it to my card. I also asked what offer will I be using first if I do online shopping at Countdown (online grocery offer and this one). They said the one I registered first, so maybe need to use this offer in store as it expires on 31 December.

  • I have an Amex airpoints card. Not platinum. Called several times re Platinum offer. Also tried live chats. No luck

    • Could try and ask if they can see other offers under you card such as "BP" and "Online Grocery".

      • finally got the Platinum offer loaded. Thanks guys

  • It seems like the T&C does not exclude the purchase of gift cards for this offer?

    • Good point!

  • Thanks OP! Got the offer loaded onto my card manually through phone.

    • What did you ask them?
I've tried ringing twice and via live chat and got rejected :(

      • I asked whether there were any offers available which they said I should have got an email about any offers as I signed up for marketing emails. I then said I understood there was a $150 more value offer available that my friend manually got applied to their card and the agent was happy to load it for me.

      • Yeah I have tried

        3 x Live Chat
        3 x Phone

"None available' every single time haha
