Recommendations for a light puffer jacket please

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a men's light puffer hooded jacket. Required: packed light in a backpack, can provide warmth against the unexpected chill. Indended use: mainly for travel (e.g to many parts of Australia and Asia where a big puffer jacket is an overkill), or for the odd cricket trips (when it starts out nice sunny in the morning but suddenly turns freezing in the evening); won't need it for every day use, but won't mind leaving it in the car for the "just in case" needs.

Eyeing for the Macpac Uber, Macpac Mercury and Kathmandu Helix, but open to suggestions. Thanks.

  • Have a look at base thermals nz. I've got the men's puffer jacket, packs up just like the Kathmandu ones into a little pouch. Reasonably priced too.

    • Thanks. Never heard of them before. It's good they seem to cover postage costs for returns (?) But there's very little info on product description, so I'm still a bit reluctant to try.

      • They are good quality. I have owned 2x before.

  • If you're leaning towards Macpac, I recommend going in-store and trying them on. They may look similar but the feel can be completely different. I was leaning towards the Uber at one point, then went in-store, tried it on, tried the halo down jacket, and ended up buying the latter.

    • I have a women's Uber and love it, it's a perfect 3-season jacket. The Halo is twice as heavy as the Uber which is a con for us. Not perfectly happy with the currently available colours for the Uber (we're after a boring plain dark blue, which is a step-up from the plain black, lol).

      • Torpedo7 just introduced a bunch of new jackets too (I'm guessing that's what new in means). They popped up yesterday/today in their sale section.

        • Thanks. I wish T7 included weight on the product description because it's quite an important factor for us in this case. (I quite like the way Macpac, Kathmandu and Icebreaker present product information on their websites — I can see all I need to know before making a purchasing decision.)

        • How does Amazon AU handle returns? The last time I had to return something (Amazon US, pre-covid) I had to drop it off at a DHL branch, or pay $20 for DHL to pick up.
