  • "Made in NZ from imported and local ingredients"
I'm going to give this deal a pass.

If this your benchmark you'll be passing on most bacon sold in supermarkets. Not that I think you're wrong, I'm with you entirely, but bacon in particular is one where the overwhelming majority is made from imported pork.

    • isnt pretty much all bacon imported nowdays?

    • Is importing inherently bad?
What about other imported consumer goods?

      • Not necessarily

        https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/food-wine/85983368/the-dr…

New Zealand is one of only 27 countries in the world to allow the use of ractopamine in pork. Most countries ban the drug because of harms it can pose to animal and human health.

Ractopamine is a hormone used to convert fat in an animal to lean muscle.

        • +5

Where can I buy some ractopamine? Asking for a friend… 🤣

          • @NeM2k2: Well, maybe ask your friend to stick to protein shakes, might not work on human…haha

"Made in NZ using pork from pigs raised in one or more of the countries listed: Finland, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Spain plus other imported and local ingredients"
man if other products told you where ingredients came front there would be a big push for nz made.

      • thanks, i thought this was in the too hard basket as well as covid.

What really drives my gears is nuts labelling.

Like cashews “made from local and imported ingredients”, then you look at the ingredients “Marlborough salt, Argentinian cashews”

      Ugh, just ugh.

      • That's not compliant with our regs. Should be imported or local. Unless of course there is more salt than cashews.

    • I'm just curious as to why. Bacon isn't a European delicacy and it must cost a lot to get refrigerated transport all the way from Europe to NZ.

      • Even low value items like potato chips get imported from Europe, it's definitely more worth the efforts for businesses to import meats from Europe. These things should be a lot cheaper even locally since they have so much surplus stock worldwide as a result of shops closing due to lockdowns, the supermarkets are laughing their way to the banks….haha

Pork (95%), Water, Salt, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Mineral Salts (450, 451), Honey, Antioxidant (316), Honey, Preservative (250)

Buy Henderson's Bacon. They are made the traditional way and don't have Nitrate

    • Unfortunately bacon has nitrates and nitrites regardless of labelling, often at higher concentrations:

Manufacturers using celery products can claim their meat has “no nitrates or nitrites added,” except for those naturally occurring. But celery is naturally high in nitrates, so adding celery powder to meat is simply another way of providing nitrates. In passing from mouth to stomach, nitrates get converted to nitrite.

      https://www.aicr.org/resources/blog/healthtalk-will-hot-dogs…

      • Even when their ingredients list is “pork, sea salt and brown sugar” ?

        • You’re right, I’ve re-read a few things on their site and they seem pretty adamant about it.

I honestly don’t know what it means for nitrate levels - for example Harrington’s seems to have a similar approach and acknowledge nitrate presence https://harringtonsmallgoods.co.nz/making-our-bacon/

Hope this doesn’t take away from the fact that NZ labelling borrowing from FDA is pretty misleading

Preservative 250 i.e. sodium nitrite is toxic. The lethal dose is 71 mg/kg for you humans.
Bacon can have up to 38mg of sodium nitrate per 100g so something else in bacon will probably kill you first (about 1.5 tons to eat?)

Rodents have higher tolerance to sodium nitrate, almost double I may humbly add!

  • This bacon burns so easily

air fryer is the only way to cook this right.

      • Ah I haven't tried bacon in the air fryer yet! Hello Saturday morning 😋

      • What settings do you use? Just joined the AF brotherhood

I just put it at 200 degrees, and keep an eye on it as it cooks in like 5min,
Also under the basket, use 2 layers of tinfoil to catch most of the fat as there will be alot of it, when there is too much oil you will see it smoking. Then bin one layer of foil and place another.

Yeah, anything bought off-the-shelf are mass produced, won't be "safe" no matter what they claim, being "safe" won't be economical for the business. They are only meeting governments' standards for being "food safe"…haha

Downvote for stupid antivax username. Everything has risks, walking out your front door has risks, wearing a seatbelt has risks. Get vaccinated because the benefits not only to you and your loved ones but the entire community on a whole far outweigh the miniscule risks involved, and they are miniscule. Vaccination reduces the impact the virus has on your body which means you're less likely to end up in hospital which means if, or more likely when, we have a major outbreak our hospitals will have a better chance of coping because the ICU's won't be clogged full of unvaccinated dumb dumbs taking up valuable bed space that other people with illnesses and injuries not related to covid could be using instead. Vaccinations save lives in ways you don't always see. Don't be selfish.

The comments in this thread have left a bad taste in my mouth. Unlike Heller's Streaky Bacon, only $10 for 800gm at your local Countdown.

    • hahaha!

  • Back in stock at Moorhouse Chch. Pricetag is $20 but $10 at checkout.

  • Heller's products are disgusting and aren't even fit for animal consumption. The amount of water in this bacon is crazy, spend a little more and get hendersons, proper bacon.

    • +1 for Henderson's. Delicious bacon.
