I think the answer is: it depends. There's a lot of hype out there, particularly peddled by those with an interest in one side of the argument or the other.

It boils down to: if you have good quality equipment and use it only for non-strenuous surface snorkeling, they are probably as safe as regular mask and snorkel. But poorly designed/fitting masks used outside their intended purpose could definitely be dangerous.
They are really for surface snorkling only. Also make sure that the masks are separated with a Looking bit and a Breathing bit separately otherwise issues with CO2 build up.
