Any mask that was designed to be a mask appears to be considered acceptable under the new policy. They just didn't want people rocking up to venues without a mask and pulling their t-shirt over their mouth to get through the door.
In terms of effectiveness, all masks are probably similar unless they have been specifically designed to seal properly around the face, have been developed to meet or exceed the P2/N95 standard, and are properly fitted to the face. And nobody will be checking that, I guarantee.

I've noticed aliexpress prices are up about 30% over the past 6 months too, ordered some more stuff from 6 sellers and 2 have turned it down as they have active infections shutting down their factory lines.
Just FYI the link appears to be now be disposable masks, can't find the mention of surgical at all per the original post.

Any idea what the ASTM level is for these type of masks? I know Bactive ones are ASTM Level 3, and there are NZ made ones which are surgical grade rated at ASTM Level 2.
the one they have on offer now are apparently Level 1
I asked them about the difference between the surgical and disposal mask. This is their reply:
The masks are indeed different, but only in terms of packaging. The functionality remains the same; both the old version and the current version are qualified to be called medical masks.
Our previous masks were manufactured according to YY 0496-2011, China's standard for medical surgical masks.
Our current masks are manufactured according to AS 4381:2015 which is the Australian standard for single use face masks, and medical masks in New Zealand are required to conform with this standard or an international equivalent.
Does this mean that ones we bought are not up to the NZ standard?
Are these the right masks for New Zealand ? like the good ones cos we can't use bad ones ?
