So Slingshot, Orcon and Stufffibre are under the same company now..what will happen if you switch between them to get free months offers?

    • +1

It's all run off of the Vocus Group infrastructure (they're all pretty terrible). Flip is also in there. The Commerce Commission has on Tuesday I believe given the go-ahead for 2Degrees to purchase the Vocus Group infrastructure in NZ.

I'd suggest though they'd still honor it though as previously moving from 'one provider' to 'another', you'd still get the new customer offers.

You can move between Orcon and Slingshot to take advantage of free provider deals already for many years they've been together, don't see why it would be any different because of Stuff fibre. Although if the Stuff fibre brand is being merged with Slingshot you won't be able to move to Stuff fibre I assume. Whether moving from Stuff fibre to Slingshot will qualify for a deal I don't know. Things may change with 2degrees but I expect not in terms of moving. More likely in terms of what brands they choose to keep.

Starting to head towards few broadband companies again. :/

    skinny has 4months free currently

    • I was going to go with them but looks like you can't BYO modem, you have to hire one?

      • Unsure about the hire part.

You can use your own modem but you won’t receive any support from Skinny. You’ll have to figure out how to connect it yoursef.

        • Ah good to know!
NOW has been really good with support so I ended up just refixing with them. Prices not quite as good though. It's $85pm standard / $68.34 customer loyalty ($820pa) / $62.95 new customer. Vs Skinny $624pa after the 4 months free.

      • they have sent one to me last week for free, I just had to pay 10$ postage

        • Oops, didn't know you could keep it not just hire. Pretty sure I've already got two spares rolling around somewhere I ought to get rid of.

@hiimpengu: yeah I have 3 of these spark modems in my garage =/

      • You can use your own modem and sell the provided one
Skinny doesn't use vlan so most modems will work.

        even better.

  • Yep, I just left slingshot for the 4 months free with Skinny

    • Do you get landline with Skinny? I thought all fibre had VOIP but it says they have no landline.

      • +1

No Skinny doesn't offer a landline. There's no requirement for a fibre provider to offer a landline and some don't. If you want to keep your landline might want to consider moving it to 2talk, Hero or some other dedicated VoIP provider then you won't cause problems or limit your options when churning. Landline charges and services also seem to vary, depending on what you pay you can get better features than many provider's stock VoIP options IMO.

E.g. I like 2talk's ability to record calls by default on their side, and their shared line feature where you can have multiple devices connected to the same SIP number and each will ring/work. So you can have an SIP client on your mobile phone and that will ring as well. (Does mean you have to rely on the SIP client and mobile data. You can get call forwarding and have it send the call to a mobile number which is likely more reliable but also with added cost etc.) But this does require their CloudPBX rather than the cheaper naked VoIP.

Of course the ability to connect any device to the SIP line rather than just whatever device the ISP offers is also a feature/advantage of going to dedicated VoIP but does carry some risk I guess and is added set-up. If setting up an SIP device manually is too complicated for you, you can probably find someone to do it for you for you for a cost on Geekzone although I think 2talk have the ability to automatically provision hardware they provide anyway. There are also a number of resellers of 2talk's service who I think provide some added support.

    • Has Skinny been good so far? Is the provided router reasonably good and reliable? Thanks!

      • Provided routers are always trash, don't plan on using it myself!

I've just received it in the mail, looks cheap and nasty - I wouldn't suggest using it

        • Thanks for the feedback!

        Does the job good enough for me. 2 people, three bedroom house;

Ethernet: TV, Xbox & Minix Neo U9-H
Wifi: two computers, two phones, Echo Dot (3rd), lights, Roborock

Only issue has been Paramount+ (USA) being slow through dns4me.

If you have your own modem then by all means use that.

        • havent been able to use Paramount+ with all the vpn deals running around.

don't you have a paid vpn from all the cashback deals here?

          • @justaddwater: Yep. Works good with NordVPN on laptop but slow for some reason with dns4me on Android box. Might have to put Nord back on the Minix.

        • Thanks Wakrak

        • So Skinny works well with smartdns? I have getflix and with stuff fibre currently.

  • +2

You can use your own modem on skinny but the settings are really annoying. DM me if you need any help with this

  • Currently having a battle with Slingshot.

Signed up with 3 month free via Glimp back in July 2021. The contract is 12 month but does not stated how much and what plan I need to stay on. So signed up for unlimited at $84.95 a monthly. Have since downgraded to 150GB a couple months ago ($69.95).

Long story short, Slighshot has lowered all 3 of their pay monthly plan by $5 but refused to match their latest pricing so I am stuck paying $69.95 instead of $65.95.

Live chat no longer works and no emails has been replied. Had to call (hate phones) and Facebook messages.

Thanks for the reminder do call their retention team.

We are with slingshot from the front line promotion. Called them asking for 3 months free but they said they could only offer 2 months. I argued that Skinny was offering 4 months and then they agreed. I know I could save an extra $80 by switching but I'm just a little lazy. I should also source my own modem/router to avoid the $5 rental fee but now I've got another 3 months to do that.

  • Anyone using Skinny successfully with smartdns like getflix? Thanks.
