Can I put a small box in NZ post bag?

I need to send a small item on trademe 10x5x3 cm
I wonder if i can put that into a small box and put it in a nzpost bag of $4.5 rather than sending as a trade me courier box, which is much more expensive: $10
It will be less than 3kg.

Anyone done that before?

  • Yes. How much did the winner pay for shipping?

    • The item is not sold yet.

      • I always make shipping the purchaser's decision.

My view is that I want all bids to be equal basis to me - ex my front door.

If you offer free shipping, you are forcing someone who lives two mins walk away in Auckland to subsidise someone from Dunedin, or you lose out yourself.

Yes, you can, but I find that trademe's shipping option is generally cheaper than anything else. Try putting it in the bag or a similar sized bag and putting the dimensions into trademe. The boxes tend to be much more expensive than bags for some reason. If you don't make the most of the bag, just reduce the dimensions and compare the price.

    • Yes, I found that too and that prompt this thread. I have a small item (battery charger) that is not fragile and can fit inside a box (for extra protection) which can then fit in a small bag. That is half price compared to a box type of courier.

So basically I can book a courier bag rather than a courier box to reduce shipping cost for the buyer, as long as it's the right weight and fit in the bag.

It's about the size, not how you package it. If the small "box" fits in a "very small" bag, you can send it as a "very small bag" (DL) even without putting it in the bag.

  • Yes you can, as long as it fits in the bag and the bag can close. Courier won't collect it though

    • I never book a courier pickup for a bag type on Trademe. Is it the same as for the box ? Or as I understand what you said that I will need to drop the bag somewhere ? Or print something and stick on a "bag" ??

Typically you get a code to write on the parcel.
When the courier arrives back at depot it gets a label printed out. For NZPost anyhows.
Yes you have to arrange a pickup location.
You have to use the courier function for shipping through trademe.
If you don't do courier through trademe you will have to lodge as you normally do

        • Does that code act as a tracking number?

          • +1

@Hayce Irri: Yep, the moment you finalize the courier and hit the button for them to come and pick it up it will automatically send a tracking number through to the person you're sending it to if the item is from a Trade Me listing, it will also provide a link to the tracking on your sold items page beside the listing, very convenient.

            • @[Deactivated]: What if you just use the method for a courier and not from something sold on TM?

              • @Hayce Irri: I don't know I've never used it for that, but if it prompts you to enter the recipients email address at any stage then I guess it will automatically email them the link to the tracking info if you do enter one.

              • @Hayce Irri: It doesn't send anything to the other party (doesn't ask you for their email address) - you just get the ticket (as for something you sold on TM), and you get an email to your address confirming details.

You can then email the tracking URL to the other party if you want to.

No, shipping through trademe with bag is the exact same as a box. You write a reference and the driver sticks a label.

You can use a box or bag to pack no problem as long as the dimensions of your package match what's specified by courier, so that means you can put the box inside a bag.

The courier will pick it up regardless of how it's packaged. To save time you can print the actual label and stick it onto the package which saves the courier having to do that.

I packaged up 3 TM items in a box for protection, price from NZpost $33, I then put the labelled box in an $11 prepaid bag which was tracked. Made no sense to me to use all that extra plastic and have it so much cheaper.

Awesome guys !! Thanks for all those tips !!! Now on, I will just use "bag shipping" to reduce the shipping cost. Shipping is actually killing the second-hand price as it sometime double the price !

  • Just for clarity:

Do you have to use a new courier bag (there is mention up above of an $11 prepaid bag), or can you re-use one that you received something in, black out all the prior info (name, address, references etc), and then just stick a new label on the bag / write the reference and the courier sticks a label on?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

    • Yeah of course, I reuse packaging all the time.

Same as HmmYepNah. I reuse most of my old parcel bags or make my own out of whatever bag I got from a store. Turn it inside out and slap the Trade Me shipping label on top.

Now that's just brilliant and so obvious now you say it!

I have always just quoted a box price to purchasers - never had anyone complain, nor, as far as I know, decline to purchase due to the freight cost, but no harm in getting it lower if I can with no extra hassle to me.

      • Besides bags, boxes can also be turned inside out…haha

        • Probably more hassle than I want to go to, but um… good idea?

          • @Alan6984: It depends really, so many options, turning boxes inside out is just something to consider at times…haha

If you buy a lot from TWH with free shipping, reuse those packaging!

@akrotohur: I think we are different pages here - its not a question of whether to re-use packaging, it was whether to use bags rather than boxes. All of the packaging is re-used already, that was a given right from the get-go.

  • You can also just send it in your own box at a NZ Postshop for $4.20 (or even $3.20 for those that still have the old non-tracked labels).
