Design, Submission, Selection, Referendum. Flag design contest? WRONG! ChoiceCheapies is turning one, and we want to give away some presents.

A year ago this month New Zealand was graced with the choice to save money, to come together as a community and push down expenses through the sharing of the best deals and bargains, we celebrate with a competition!

Our first birthday competition will be to design a Choice(Cheapies) t-shirt.

By way of rules, there really are no restrictions on what design you may submit, as long as it includes the phrase "ChoiceCheapies" and the URL "Cheapies.nz" you are free to design as you please, this includes shirt color.

Please submit entries as a comment below, with a link to your image.

The vote will be split between a community vote, and a Moderator/Power User vote, with each given 50% weight on the final result.

Submissions will remain open for 3 weeks, until the end of September, and the referendum will begin on October 1st, running for 1 week, in a dedicated thread that will be setup after submissions are closed.

The prizes will consist of 1 * $300 for first place, 2 * $100 for the runners up and, as well as this, every entrant will receive one t-shirt printed with the winning design.
It seems The Warehouse have decided to copy our competition (Probably through infiltration of Cheapies HQ) so maybe someone can win both!

Terms and Conditions
  • Cash prizes will be sent either via Paypal, or in the form of a gift card of your choice.
  • Entry into the competition is restricted to NZ based users only, a physical address must be submitted, after confirmation of prizes, through email or PM in order to claim prizes (t-shirt or t-shirt + cash).

Fantastic, just to clarify should we add actual images(ie the choicecheapies logo/something else) or just text.

    • +1

That's for the designer to decide, use of the logo obviously negates the requirement to add the text name.

      • Could you upload a good quality version of the ChoiceCheapies logo?

        • +1

Hi. I have added the logo + icon in both PNG and SVG format so you can use them in your designs. See the updated competition description above.

        • @scotty: Thanks Scotty :) Would you happen to know the name of the font used in the logo? Thanks.

        • +1

@Wellington: Sorry I was out on the road. The font should be Roboto Condensed. You should be able to download the TTF somewhere…

        • @scotty: Awesome! Thank you. :)

My Sunday afternoon has been spent giving myself a crash course in Gimp (too cheap for photoshop!), and learning how to put images together. Below are the first few designs, these ones are very basic with a ChoiceCheapies logo on the front and the url on the back. I will give making some more unique ones a go soon. :)

      rant alert

No offence intended to Danto, but we're completely over the whole black/silver fern logo thing. Kinda sad that such a magnificently beautiful diverse country has to be reduced to the mindless inane simplicity of only two stylistic representations. And a football jersey at that. #shudder

Please, please let there be more to the future of this country than a muddy football jersey.

On topic of the competition, there is no requirement to use the logo, and by all means, if someone wants to create their own "logo" image and use that with the name, that is fine.

The current logo we have is a vast improvement over the original logo though, but is not necessarily permanent. Maybe that can be a future competition.

      • I agree it is overused but this competition in my eyes isn't an overhaul of the current branding. I've come close and tempted to redesign the logo but the competiton is for a t-shirt. Why would I design a t-shirt with a totally different look to the current design of the website. Where is the design logic in that? Maybe a comedic image for the front could change it up but I'm sorry the fern is here to stay as it is apart of the branding, unless the competition changes to a rebrand. Again I agree with you. It's overused but look at the website banner.

        • Yeah, no criticism intended of your logo choices, Danto. Hence the Rant Alert heading. Though, just pointing out that as per Shaw's comment, in this competition, you can actually change the logo if that is what you want to do.

Great to see you take the time to work on those entries. Hard at it….

        • @Jay:
Yea I guess the competition is to design a t-shirt ooooorrrr redesign our brand of us. That's a lot more effort though…Maybe an unpaid gfx graduate will do it.

        • @danto:

That's not thinking like a CC dude!! Outsource the job online to Bangladesh or Mumbai for $30. Pick up the $300 prize. Sweet as …..

  • Redesign 1

I did this at work so technically it was free.

  • Had another go tonight. I personally think that simplistic t-shirts with minimal design and colours look better, so thats what this one is based off.

More of an idea than a design at this point but I just wanted to look at it visually.

  • I might update mine closer to the cutoff time (to include more stuff) but here is my first design:
    https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/42/296/choicecheapies_tshir…

    • Just a tip, your tshirt is either purely white or black so therefore if you wanted it half/half you would either need to find a shirt thats been made half black & white or you are printing one side purely white or black which isnt realistic and I doubt a screen printer will or can do it perfectly.

      • That is apart of my design. It can be done by getting a white tshirt and black tshirt and sewing together or printing black on the back..

Is there a rule stating the tshirt has to be a single colour?

        • +1

No there isnt a rule against it and I did say 'you would either need to find a shirt thats been made half black & white'. Not critisizing your design, Im just informing you that there might be limitations. Also if you understand the process of how a tshirt is made, it is not normal to sew a tshirt with a white front with a black back, the pattern doesnt work like that. It is possible however to have a tshirt with the top part (neck and sleeves) white and the bottom half black.

Here's my design with two options for t-shirt colour: grey marle and navy!

  • Didn't have the time myself to commit to entering something great as I intended, some people here might find a site like Custom Ink a bit easier to mock up a t-shirt with images/text before tonight's deadline.

    ie: https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/27/302/customink.jpg

I love the OZB Urban Dictionary Description etc

ozbargained To be unexpectedly swamped by a phenomenal number of cheapskates for the sole purpose of getting something for cheap or free, who most probably gave you fake details and whom you will never hear from again.

  • Hey guys! This is my design, went for something simple but playful :) hope you like it!

Found a cool font that lets you put symbols of people shopping instead of text, so I added it around the bottom of the number 4 design above, but could work with any. Design 6

  • Long time lurker first time poster…
    So here was my criteria:
    1. Needs to be eye catching
    2. Bold
    3. Would happily wear

    Here it is:
    * Front: http://snag.gy/JGQZJ.jpg
    * Front 2(with web address) : http://snag.gy/DQiuD.jpg
    * Back: http://snag.gy/oHd3F.jpg

Decided to go with orange as it would be appealing and better then 'boring' white

    Hope you like it!

    • edit: Front 1 has no url so here is the correct one :)

That design on the back looks pretty snazzy :P

    • Forgot to credit MrChiwi for the CC logo…thx :)

  • Any chance of extending the deadline on this? Seems a few more entries would provide a range of ideas to choose from. Just a thought….

    • +5

We have discussed the option of extending the competition, but felt that 3 weeks (one of which was advertised) is already long enough for it to run for. There is still ~8 hours left if you, or anyone you know, are interested in entering though.

The problem with extending is that there will always be a case to do so, it happens in every competition posted, so it's easier to not go there and just let the competition run with the original dates.

  • Hi Guys,

Probably the last entry - Really wanted to drop in a simple and catchy sign.
I don't want to use anything flashy.

    Here's my design:
    Front - https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/417/312/front-final.jpg
    Back - https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/417/314/t-shirt_back_final.…

Keep up the good work !

    Cheers !!

  • Before the voting begins I would just like to wish all the entrants the best of luck! Quite a talented lot. :)
