Recommend a 27" or above QHD/4K Monitor for Study/Writing

G'day all. My partner is after a monitor for her new study/work setup. 27" and QHD minimum.

Study wise, a lot of browser tabs, pdf and word documents. Work wise, pdfs and coloured maps.

Recently got her a second-hand Dell Latitude 7490 laptop through the company my work deals with when it comes to staff computers.

Specifications

  • Dell Latitude 7490
  • Core i5 8250U @ 1.60GHz
  • 8GB memory
  • 256GB SSD Hard drive
    Extras: Dell D6000 docking station

Monitor wise, I currently have an Aoc q27p1 which is fine but wouldn't mind getting her something else.

Budget $450 max. Ideally between $300 - $400.

I've been eyeing up the Dell 27 USB-C Monitor - S2722DC

Alternatively, wait for the Dell 27 Monitor - S2721DS to go on sale again since we already have a docking station + use the 7% off code once it's active again.

I remember this comment from chaoscreator which has me thinking about other possible options:

I have the S2721DS, which I got at a much cheaper price from a previous deal here:

It's an OK monitor. My old ASUS VE278Q released in 2011 actually has a much better colour accuracy and looks way nicer. The only good thing about the Dell is that it has thin bezels. Other than that, it's OK for standard office use.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thank you,

Wakrak

  • You could get a 2nd hand 4K 27" unit without stand for sub $200 if you don't mind buying used

    • Could be a goer. I was looking on FB and Trade Me but limited but search to just Hamilton/Waikato. Should probably broaden my search area.

    • Not too sure about that. When I was looking for a monitor a couple of months ago I saw lots of 1080p 24" several years old dell ultrasharps and p series going for $200 used.

      • If you search TM "Lenovo ThinkVision X1 27" 4K" there is a few available.

Quite a good find, I could only find one listing with 5 available. Even though they are 6 years old now it doesn't seem to be lacking in any way. The technology hasn't really progressed much.

          Although, upon closer inspection.
It appears to me you are the seller, can you confirm this?

          • @Bill: 🕵🏼‍♂️

Bit of a laugh if it is.

            • @Wakrak: Yes, seems like it is too synchronous to be a serendipitous surprise. Or perhaps we have found Todd a new friend.

@Bill: Could be just a coincidence.
There are probably a lot of people from Bulls, called Todd, who have 27” monitors for sale….🤔

            • @bigcheese: Yes, absolutely. Glad I didn't jump to conclusions.

          • @Bill: Also if anyone does want to do business with Todd it might be more symbiotic to see if he wants to do the trade off trademe to avoid his fees and cut trademe's sticky fingers out of the honey pot. Although he is a top seller so he might still prefer not to.

edit: hope I assumed the correct pronouns

          • @Bill: Bill the detective, yes it is me which is why I didn't link it directly, but there are other people selling the same unit for a bit more. If anyone wants a slightly better price they can contact me directly.

If she's spending LOTS of time on the computer studying a 4k monitor is a definite worthwhile investment over 1440.

Best money I invested back in uni tbh. I'd be on the lookout on trademe,

    Here's a NL one with a nice stand https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/p/dell-27-4k-uhd-monitor/N2067…

which is just over your budget

    • She'll definitely be spending a lot of time on it. Her new job has said that once she's up to scratch she's free to work from home most days of the week + she'll be doing assignments on her days off.

    • TheMarket 5% discount makes it $455.24 including delivery with marketclub plus.

  • I have the S2721DS and for the price i paid (old deal posted above), would definitely recommend it.
It does have a bit of backlight bleed in black scenes but other than that no other negatives.

    • Do you mind if i ask how you get the EPP code please?
Is there a list of organisations that are eligible and do you need an email from one of them?
      Thanks

Just chucked in my work email and it worked. Don’t think we have any affiliation with Dell.

  • I have been using a Samsung and it's been great - Model U28E590D. I have purchased two in the past few years, both 2nd hand and no issues. Both bought for under $300

    Like this one: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/monitors/l…

There aren't any listed in the Waikato region though.

  • Tempted to just say 'bugger it' and buy the new Dell 27 Monitor - SE2723DS for $371 delivered with discount codes.

    • And that is what I've done. Delivered by May 1.

      • How did you get it to $371?
The website is currently showing $499 for me.

        • Got a 20% off and a 7% off code using the Dell link I mentioned a few comments above.

          • @Wakrak: Oh I thought only the 7%. didn't realise it gives 20% as well.
            Cool, thanks.
