Can opener recommendations

What can opener are you using and do you recommend it? We've gone through so many. Currently using the OXO Soft Works which has good reviews and is quite expensive but opening cans is still hard to impossible for me and not easy for my partner. Thanks.

I got the Brabantia - Tasty can opener for $20 last year. Does a good job. Decent reviews online too. We don't open cans that often though. Only when we make falafels which is every other month.

I found the old style can opener to be the best, I can't recall where I got it from since it's been so long…haha

    Looks something like this one:

    • Oh hell no, I still remember the pain of hammering that in as a child.

      • Haha, yep, they are not the easiest to use but they last forever and probably one of the cheapest.

I use the OXO Good Grips Can Opener, bought a few years back and has lasted alot longer then any other can opener I have owned.
A bit pricey but does the job for me.

    • +1 for the Oxo Good Grips can opener

We also have been through many can openers. Often finding they're bloody useless. I recall the one built into my Swiss army knife was very good. My current favorite is one I got from a street market vendor so I can't tell you the brand but it's not like any other one I've ever seen.

It opens by cutting just below the top around the side in such a way that the can top is able to be put back on the can as a lid. It leaves NO sharp edges. It doesn't open ALL cans but it works on most. Bloody amazing.
My backup when all else fails in a butchers knife stabbed thru the top of the can and used to just muscle thru the lid and cut away enough to remove the contents. IT's not the best way to keep your knife sharp but it NEVER fails.

    • Yum, slithers of tin amongst your food, gotta be good for you.

Found it it's the Bartelli Soft Edge 3-in-1 Ambidextrous Safety Can Opener Jar Opener and Bottle Opener.

This is what we use, it was my grandparents, I remember using it at their place when I was a kid and when they died I took it. It's also great for breaking the seals on jars with hard to open lids. Looks a bit tatty but it gets the job done every time. https://ibb.co/vVD4DjV

I feel like I need a Tetanus shot just from looking at that pic

We have a Tupperware one, bought it years ago for around $60, still going strong.

Amazing reviews! I wish I knew someone with one so I could borrow to try before buying :)

Tupperware one opens like what Drcspy says too "It opens by cutting just below the top around the side in such a way that the can top is able to be put back on the can as a lid. It leaves NO sharp edges." Tried to think how long we had it, as I remember $60 was a lot of money for a can opener. I would at least 16 years if not longer. Before buying that. I used to buy can openers once every one or two years. I am sure lots of people have the Tupperware one. Borrow it to try out first, definitely a good investment.

Old flatmate of mine had a Tupperware one. Really nice can opener to use. Not sure if I'd buy one for that price as other ones get the job done for me at a cheaper price.

Nobody mentioned the automatic / electric ones yet? These are cool from both a gadget geek point of view and if you have arthritis/grip issues.
My current one is this (or similar) There are plenty similar around the place. Love it.

Or if you want a benchtop one the sunbeam has been around for years

yeah i use that sunbeam its great

      • Second that.

  • We use a brabantia one from Briscoes. It's lasted 9 years of 2-3 cans per week. Good steel, at least when we bought it. Ditto with their garlic crusher. Bought two because i expected them to break like all the garlic crushers I've ever had. We still have two!

I have recently bought this one…Has been solid so far

(Obviously don't pay full price for this)

      • I don't think anyone would pay full price at Briscoes would they?

        • +1

Yes, good point. I can't see any cheapies member doing that

                • @bigcheese: I am tempted but I didn't use can opener much..the one I bought from Kmart for $2 a few years back still working pretty well. Would love a recommendation of kitchen scissor tho!

      • +1 on this one. it was the recommended model from a facebook group I'm in. and yes we waited for a sale. :)

      • I have this one also (Brabantia Essential). I've had it for 3-4 years, using it every other day and is still working as new. Was recommended by a family member working for Briscoes as the best one they sold. Easily the best can opener I've ever owned.

  • The bog standard can opener is the most versatile. I got a Magican and while it doesn't create sharp edges it won't work with odd-sized cans, like oblong cans.
