Getting Absolutely Rooted for a Heatpump Installations for Home. Any Advice?

Our Multi heatpump outside unit which connects to four inside units has packed up and the repairman has given us a quote of $4000 just to replace the existing compressor with new pressure.. He also gave us an option of replacing all the units inside and out for $7400!

This is my parents house in Christchurch which is quite modern but the heatpump systems are about 10 years old. It's quite a wack of money so any suggestions on where to get a quote from would be much appreicated!

We have had great experiences with Daniel at DC installation services. Competitive pricing and will match competitors.
Always given honest opinions on replacing vs upgrading, and moving units with renovations.

    • Brilliant I will contact them for advice. Cheers

The outdoor unit is generally the most expensive part of a heatpump, and one that can do 4 inside units would be quite large, 15kw+. See if you can find the same or similar outdoor unit to buy separately to give you a baseline of what the cost is going to be just for that part, I suspect part of the issue is that the outdoor unit may be end of life and no longer available, so would also require replacing the indoor units if you get a new outdoor unit. I am not sure how cross-compatibility works on some brands. The current unit may also use the R22 refrigerant so may need conversion, not sure how that works either.

    • Ah that makes sense cheers. Yes I think compatibility is an issue since these models are 10 years old and the guy wanted us to do a complete fresh install of everything…

Also look into the efficiency of systems. There is a convenient factor of having a single large unit outside, but they tend to be way less efficient.

4 small units tend to use less power for the same performance when compared to 1 larger unit so there is long term cost savings coming their way of replacing with multiple small ones. Plus next time something fails, it’s only a single small unit to replace

Anyone have any suggestions for reliable heat pump installers/sellers in lower hutt?

    • I'm interested in this as well!

$7500 for a complete refresh of the outdoor and 4 x indoor units sound's pretty good to me. We just paid $3600 for supply and install of a 6.8Kw Mitsubishi unit with a single indoor unit.

    • We got quoted a similar price for a similar capacity. It's a replacement for a HP that died after almost 20 years of service. Actually only the outside unit died, but have to replace the whole thing due to compatibility issues. And it's not a back-to-back install (so more expensive).

  • The new unit should be using R32 refrigerant, it is a better gas and more economical to run and faster to cool or heat up than the older R22 or R410a added bonus is that its also better on the environment too. Check the heating kW to cooling kW cause some of the rated heat pumps references cooling instead of heating and vice versa so you don't want to get the wrong one for your needs :) sorry all my contacts are in Auckland :'(

    • When was R32 adopted in NZ? Thanks.

Not sure, but I know Daikin came up with the R32 gas. I've seem some older models (4 years back) using R32 gas already.

  • I work for a branch of Aotea Electric and can confirm from the inside they're a really great company. You could contact the Canterbury branch and ask for a quote. Then compare their recommendation to the recommendation you currently have.
