Issues with Samsung Watch & Warranty

Heya,

This morning my Galaxy Watch Active 2 has started playing up as shown in this image

I purchased from noel leeming in March 2020 however I believe the warranty was only 1 year.

Would I be able to get the repair fee covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act or something similar?

Thanks fellas

  • Currently I am leaving it alone to try and see if that helps. I had a similar issue on my phone screen but it seemed have been better the day after (still took it in to get fixed as it was under warranty)

My opinion is that two years is at the very very bottom end of what you could reasonably expect something like that to last - I think three years is not at all unreasonable. The price tag when purchased is extremely relevant.

Obviously predicated on the product having been treated reasonably too.

Purchased for about 599 I believe.
no visual damage to the watch, only about 1 or 2 very minor scratches on the screen.

was expecting about 5 years out of it

Warranty period is far too short.CGA will override that however Noel Lemons have been busted before for trying it on and fobbing people off when it comes to claims past warranty periods and the CGA. DON'T let them fob you off!

    • I agree the warranty is too short.

after a Google search most people say that they want to upgrade their smart watch to the newest one for the new features every two years however It's hard to find something that will say how long it'll last before the screen (or other functions on the watch) break

we have many galaxy watch wearers in the house (including some that are older than mine) however I've been the only one to have issues.

infact, out of the oodles of samsung products we've owned, I've been the only one in my household to have issues with the device even though I've never done damage to any of my devices.

      maybe I'm just unlucky

    TLDR: yes.

If you are told it's out of warranty and not covered (happens in lots of stores all of the time) then i'd go with 'i'd like to escalate this as a cga claim' (matches the terminology on their repairs booking system, honestly being calm and reasonable is the easiest way. I (when working for a shop like this) have had the odd person who was taken aback by our willingness to cooperate for CGA claims.

Unfortunately, like most other retailers who sell extended warranties, they drag their feet around cga claims and you'll be looking at more than a month.

Another issue is that if it gets assessed and comes back as a user fault, damage or misuse (i dont know what it could be for that one.. maybe more battery cycles than days?) you'd be on the hook for their assessment fee before receiving your goods back. (No different than the ordinary warranty tbh)

Check out this link where someone won on the disputes tribunal for an arguably questionable ruling for a smartwatch reddit link because nzherald is paid

…. and apple themselves still sell the no-longer supported apple watch S3

    • Excellent point I would say.

Whilst DT decisions are not 'precedent setting' (and this one was about updates) it does indicate that three years is a reasonable period for which the CGA should apply to a smart watch.

Referencing a previous decision could do no harm?

  • If it helps try giving Samsung a go with the CGA as NL won't want to take it back because it costs them money.
They send it back to Samsung and if they get a bill they will fight as much as they can.
Of course try to be reasonable don't be a dick it goes a long way with the staff on the other end.

    • CGA stipulates it is the retailers responsibility, so Samsung the manufacturer won't care until Noel Leeming sends them the product?

      • I know but they will be dragging their heels because it's gonna be on their tab. Basically it cuts the middle man out and some manufacturers do cover outside of the specified period ie 12 months warranty but they usually do 18months without question
Otherwise just ask them to inspect under CGA and if it's reasonable small claims

  • semi-good news:

this morning (the day after I bought a new galaxy watch) I go to my old watch and see it's working fine now…

now I have 2 watches that look almost the same

kinda wish I went for a new colour yesterday when buying it

    • You might be lucky, but in my experience, if something has an issue that 'comes and goes', it generally re-appears, and with increasing frequency, so likely (but not certainly) it will still fail in the near future.

However, it does mean that, if you force the issue with NL, and they want to 'send it off' (which could takes weeks), at least you have the new one to use so it won't matter so much to you.

If it does get fixed, you could always sell it off second-hand (if you are comfortable that it is working okay).

      Alan.

      • yeah, I doubt its worth bringing it up with NL / Samsung at this point, I had a screen issue with my phone, and they repaired it the first time, however it was still happening (but it wasn't as noticeable as the first time that it happened, and by the time the technician looked at the phone, the screen wasn't having the issue anymore. About 8 months later and I havent had the issue come back

Also I don't want to pay a fee for a technician to look at the watch as the fee isn't covered under warranty.

I'll keep testing around with the old watch for a bit and see if it 'comes and goes'
