Have a look at Aqara on Aliexpress. It’s a pretty cheap and easy option / eco system to get into. And they are home assistant compatible

    • Thank you I will check on them

  • What is your end goal with this? Sensibo products do this well, even without a subscription (which just increases the data retention, as well as some other features). However, they're aimed at specifically automating an air conditioner which they do well but require positioning when they have IR visibility of the device they're controlling.

  • I have couple of BroadLink RM4 Mini Smart Remote and Sensor Cable which works great as universal remote and it has temperature & humidity sensor in the cable. They work pretty good. I have few automations running and haven't missed a bit yet. Great support in Home Assistant if you use it.

I think I bought it around ~$33. 1 from aliexpress other from Amazon AU. Amazon AU has sale sometimes so keep an eye.

    • I just bought one of these which arrived last week. Started setting it up and it worked straight away, but when it came time to programming my heatpump it looked like that would take a while to ensure all the commands were correct. How did you find that side of things?

      • Are you talking about Broadlink App or Home Assistant?

I have Haier heat pumps and found one of haier library working.

For Home assistant I am using SmartIR

I have something like this in configuration.yaml

        climate:
        - platform: smartir
        name: Bedroom AC
        unique_id: bedroom_ac
        device_code: 1320
        controller_data: remote.bedroom_remote_remote
        temperature_sensor: sensor.bedroom_remote_temperature
        humidity_sensor: sensor.bedroom_remote_humidity

  • https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/HOMMIX27012/Xiaomi-Mi-Home-… - these are excellent and appear to hook in to home assistant, if you run that.

    • I have couple of those from Aliexpress (around $7-10 shipped), pbtech one doesn't even include battery. They are not supported out of the box into Home Assistant. You need to flash a custom firmware to do so as far I know. Did that and it was all working fine for around 6 months or so. But home assistant upgrade broke the integration and now I can't get it back running. The problem with custom firmware is, I can't flash it back to factory default even though it is possible.

Also, they work on bluetooth connection, so you need to have good short distance connection between this and the receiver.

They are pretty cheap so buy couple from Aliexpress to play around. I can still see the temperature & humidity on the display after around 1 year battery on it, just no integration yet.

    • If you're happy paying a little more and waiting its only $30.45 for 4x shipped via AliExpress

It only supports Bluetooth (BLE) so if wanting to use Home Assistant then you would need to have a bluetooth capable device

      • For Home assistant do I need Bluetooth or wifi you mean to say ?

        • Think of home assistant as the central hub “brains”
All your smart devices connect via Home Assistant which acts as the link, taking information or input from one device and sending to another.

If you are using Bluetooth temp sensors then you need to make sure that the computer / raspberry pi etc that you install home assistant has Bluetooth.
Otherwise just go wifi capable devices (or Zigbee or z wave if you’re getting a compatible hub)
