Washing Machine Recommendations - 8KG

Hi guys,

I've got a 9 or so year old Bosch machine machine that had been working flawlessly, but over the past 12 months has been needing quite a bit of attention and I think it's just time to replace it and go for a larger capacity model while we are at it (original unit was purchased before we had kids).

I think the current machine is around 6.5KG (not home at the moment to check) which is a a bit small and probably has been pushed to it's limits a few times, so a larger unit is probably necessary. Currently a front loader which I'd like to stick with too.

I don't care too much about brands, but would like something that will last at least 5 years and just do plain old washing (we don't really use any of the extra wash features and whatnots).

There weren't any models given last time this was posted about 12 months ago: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/29004
Hoping some members have purchased in the last 1-2 years in the rough weight range and can give input.

Looking for some recommendations and then I'll try and determine the best price I can get from there.

Anyone know what sort of deal Smiths City does with Farmlands?

  • Folllowing this with interest. I'm looking to get the Bosch WAN24121AU

Bosch Serie 4 | 8kg Front Load Washing Machine. Just waiting for the price to go down a bit more.

Scored 9th place, but that's still good as it was well within their recommended rating as well as being the 2nd cheapest front-loader option to score that

      • Thanks mate.

    • Checked with Smiths city and no further discount on that unit, so seems like $999 is best price.

      • You can always price match it with Harvery Norman or Kitchen Things. Maybe bargain for free delivery.

    • Curious have you @Wakrak @Toddy47 bought this machine at the end? and if not which one have you bought?

I'm interested in this and thought the price of $1099 is ok. Not the cheapest but not far from it.
But then on second look realise the drum of this Bosch model is smaller in comparison to other 8KG machines such as F&P or Electorlux. The sales guy at HN said using the weight as an indication of how much load a machine can take is deceptive. While it can take 8kg dry clothing load it doesn't mean you can fit that much into the drum for it to wash effectively.

      • Remembered your comment but forgot where I saw it until now. Yes I did buy it in the end.

        • Thanks Wakrak. How do you find it?

Btw loves your contribution on the site. Have been a long term silent follower.

          • @Ikik: Partner gives it a 10/10. Doesn't tear the clothes apart and has worked well since day dot. We've used it almost every day since having a kid (now six months old). Baby clothes, dirty car cleaning rags, pillows, work clothes etc, it has held up. I give it a decent wipe down + drum clean every month. We upgraded from an old F&P washing machine.

We only have one issue and it's nothing to do with the washing machine. Where it sits is uneven, so it shakes the house quite a bit (every second month we have to readjust the legs but it's a tight spot to get into). We asked Bosch about this, and they sent someone out to have a look. So, the support has been great too.

Over on the consumer reviews thread someone had asked for the washing machine buyers guide

I posted both the buyers guide, and the full review summary of 40 models

Probably worth checking that out. If you wanted the more detailed review of any specific model, would you mind replying to that other thread / post so I can post there. Makes it more visible for other people interested.

I can personally vouch for the WV5-1408W as a good 8kg model if you happen to find that in stock anywhere, having owned myself since the start of the year.

  • We have the Bosch WVG28420AU 8kg with 4.5kg dryer (great to use with contact 3 hours of free power). Only had it one year so I can't comment on reliability etc, but we're happy with it.

Smith's city do offer discounted prices with farmlands card (I work for FL), but it does vary on the product.

    • How do you find the dryer function? I don't currently own a dryer, but was thinking of getting a washer/dryer once current washing machine craps out, but have heard that combo washer dryers are generally pretty crap, and the full cycles take forever (5-6 hours)…seeing as Bosch is a decent brand though it might be alright?

      • I read on a FB forum the majority of people not liking them but I think it's brilliant, no need to swap clothes to a separate dryer etc.
If you use the auto dry function then it usually says around 2.5 hours, but we don't use that. You can opt for 15 or 60min dry time, Either gentle or intensive drying function. 60min Gentle seems fine to me, comes mostly dry, then hang in garage overnight just to air it out etc. 1 more hour and it comes out dry ready to put away.
Washing function we do 45min wash, but you can also do 15 min quick wash (+ 10min spin dry), which we find all good for towels/sheets

  • Bought this one

Got it for 970-250 Noel leeming gift card promo.
So far works great. Just didn't want to spend a lot as I aim to change it in 5 years again.
