House Renovation - Advice on Obtaining Discounts on Materials

Hi Cheapies! Asking for advice with regard discount on all building materials. We have a full house reno (Garage extension, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, walls being moved ceiling replaced - total carnage and mayhem!)
Our building quotes are coming in and seem to be charging retail rates on materials. Whilst i doubt I can get into ordering trusses and frames (lol) if I could save money on bathroom-kitchen, paint, lighting and some materials every cent is a saving. I have been considering a farmlands card and was wondering if any one out there had used it at M10, Bunnings, plumbing suppliers etc and the size discount it gives. Is it worth the expense? I am unable to open a business account as I am a lowly healthcare worker. I have the CSC buyers group members discount-has anyone used this at for building supplies and what sort of savings does it provide?
Looking forward to money saving replies ;) Cheers Ruth

  • I think you will find the tradies are already getting a good discount on these items, but passing them on with a profit margin added to you, its how they make most of their money.
It would pay to check with your tradies whether they are happy to do the job with you supplying some of the materials

    • Thanks La, have spoken to the two builders we have had come look at the job, and they are happy for us to supply kitchen, bathroom, electrician, plumber, tiler etc and sundry items eg. internal doors, fixtures and fittings I wouldnt want to get into get into suppling GIB/framing/trusses etc

  • Join the Facebook Group: Property Investors Chat Group NZ
Then you can have access to:
    - Dulux Trade Account
    - Bunnings Trade Account

    • awesome, just looked into this! I joined the chat group and looked up Bunnings, saw post about asset lab and powerless card

      • The Property Investors Chat Group discount is quite slim now compared to other Bunnings accounts
We have a separate Bunnings discount which gives more than $8 difference on some small items compared to the chat group.

        • i linked my existing card to the chat group. Hopefully i didnt bugger it up lol

      • Not sure when you want to start renovating but these cards can take ages to arrive

    • any idea how much discount for Bunnings? I have one existing trade account and the discount is very slim

      • +1

Varies hugely depending on item from 0 to around 30%.

    • Thanks for the info aih-lun! Very much appreciated ;)

    • Great! What fab info. Have joined the group. Cheers aih-lun

  • Get a part time job at Bunnings/Mitre10 then you get staff discounts :P

    • I miss those discounts.
Spent many dollars when I used to work there (Bunnings)
Discount is on a cost+10%+GST basis.

    • Good idea! ;0) Ta

  • I would check out the n3 card if you can at Bunnings. Bought a bunch of things years ago at Bunnings on trade, very little discount. With n3 not long ago, everything discounted.

    • How does one get a n3 card?

      • Some businesses sign up as part of a buying group and get refund on total spend (I think). My employer does this and staff can ask for a personal card (app now ) to use at various retailers. Friend of mine used his n3 card for my purchase and I was surprised by the discount. My employer hasn't got around to giving me one yet.

        • Not quite.
As a business you pay a membership fee to join N3 and are then able to utilise their bulk buying power to obtain discounts at various merchants - you don't get a refund on your spend.
You get a number of trade membership cards (and app access) with your membership in order to get the discount which can be given out to staff as well.
There is only a certain number of membership cards you can get per business so depends on how your business chooses to allocate these.

A business can also link some of their existing accounts to N3 (Bunnings, Placemakers etc) and then get the N3 discount on their monthly accounts.

    • Thanks 2cheap, I've applied for the Bunnings card but it asked for a GST number-just inputted a random number so lets see if anything comes of it. If not, might try applying via property investors group

      • For future, just use your IRD number as your GST number.
It's what you will find is the case for business anyway.

Sole trader GST number = your IRD number
Company GST number = Company IRD number

There is no way to verify a GST number in NZ so you will be fine.

        • I did not know that - great tip! Thanks!

        • thanks big cheese, good to know

    • Thanks 2cheap, have applied so will see how I get on. Cheers

  • Another option for Bunnings is the Fonterra Super Card - I have it for Petrol but you can use it at bunnings and lots of other places. Discounts are random and per item - sometimes its nothing, other times pathetic - like 10c and then other times really large - i think i saved like $200 on some blinds for like $500 - its genuinely luck of the draw. Overall better than nothing thou.

Lots of threads you can search on the main page which tells you more.

  • You probably won't be able to get a farmlands card atm unless you're a farmer, but they give:
    - discount at Bunnings which is sometimes worse and often better than the property investors card
    - 10% off most stuff at mitre 10, 5% of a lot of the rest and 0 on the remainder
    - good discounts at resene
    - quite a few others non building related
