Buying from Catch.co.nz - GST / Imports Duty?

Good evening all.

Does anyone here have experience buying from Catch.co.nz?

I'm attempting to buy something that costs approx $600 NZD. At checkout a small message says: "There are items in your cart over the low value import threshold".

I'm unclear what this means. I thought NZ's import threshold is now $1000. I will contact Catch, but any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi from my experience, low value import threshold is NZD400. However, recently bought an item from Amazon US for less than NZD$200, site charged GST.
    Receipt (in USD) showing like,

    Total before GST:$96.68
    Estimated GST:$14.50

    • Thanks for that. That is nice and clear.

I was expecting Catch to also include GST in their pricing. Except the message goes on to say something like: you may have to pay additional GST and import duties.

    • If the counter-party is GST registered, then they will add GST regardless of the amount.

  • Strange that Catch aren't GST registered, I'd have thought they'd have a few sales here, but their website doesn't seem to have been updated with the changes from 2019:

Anecdotal evidence suggests that items under $1000 from a retailer that isn't GST registered won't require payment of GST or fees, there is some discussion in other deal posts, maybe B&H.

  • Update:

Here is the "low value import threshold" message on the checkout page:

Catch customer support said GST is included in their price, but NZ Customs may/will calculate the duty or additional taxes. Hmmmm.

  • +1

I bought a vaccuum from there and had no trouble, but that was only $350

  • I always use the 'customs import duty calculator' website when buying overseas. Better safe than a nasty unexpected bill
