Hi everyone, could you please recommend something to slice a hard cheese block into slice? I want slices for sandwiches but don't want to buy ready-made cheese slices. Used a Good Cook cheese slicer but it didn't last. Used chef knives but quite struggled to make even slices. Thanks.

Do you have a fancy slicer? I have this one. 1.5 years, I still have the receipt (email) but not the packaging so I don't know how long the warranty is. One bit of the plastic that held the wire broke.

I found a picture - it looks like this:

Thanks. Can it cut semi-hard cheese like Edam and Colby? How big are the slices you can make from yours?
@sunshinenz: No problem - it will go through anything except a very soft cheese like brie which would just mush up.
The slices are very thin (too thin to measure) - far thinner than I could ever cut with a knife, and I would say maybe half the thickness of the cheese slices you get in packs, although not as consistent of course.
You can make them thicker (up to a point) by pressing down harder, but if I wanted a thicker slice, I would just use a cheese knife.
@Alan6984: Sorry I meant how wide are the slices? Enough to cover the bread slice, i.e. similar width to ready-made cheese slices?
@sunshinenz: No, about half the width of the pre-packed ones - perfect for crackers, or do two for a slice of bread.
@Alan6984: Thanks!
@sunshinenz: To be fair, I always slice across narrowest face of a block of cheese, so I am getting narrow slices due to that!
I'd get exactly the same area of cheese if I used a knife, albeit much thicker.
I recommend the Westmark Cheese Slicer.
You can make thin or thick slices depending on the angle you hold the slicer.Thanks. That one seems to have good reviews but having just broken a wired slicer I'm not sure if I want to go for another yet ;)
We use a… cheese slicer, which looks like a big peeler (sort of), and you draw it across the cheese to thinly slice it.
Had it years and years - cannot imagine how it would ever break, so must be very different from what you had.
