  • Anyone know much about this sort of stuff?

Just googled Kali Linux VPS for Pentesting and the first site I came across has (for US$7.95/month):

Guessing threre's a benefit to having the data center in NZ?

Just googled Kali Linux VPS for Pentesting and the first site I came across has (for US$7.95/month):

Think it's just marketing, as in Kali is a Linux build with tools preinstalled for pen testing which is preinstalled on this VPS by default.

Guessing threre's a benefit to having the data center in NZ?

Definitely is, historically the prices of NZ hosting have been ridiculously high compared to international prices.

This is a pretty poor deal, even by their standards, but the exchange rate is a part of that too.

Their service is good however, so am happy to recommend them to others looking for NZ based hosting, but this isn't a very good price.

    • It's kind of a pointless package.

The average person who doesn't know what Kali is isn't going to buy this.

The kind of person who needs it, doesn't need a preinstalled package. They'll just buy a bare VPS based on the spec supplied relative to price and put the latest build of Kali on themselves.

So for all intents and purposes, simply compare it to what you find Googling "NZ VPS" only, as that's the only thing that matters relative to its price and spec.

Specwise I'm having trouble finding out what hardware is available (are they 1GHz Nehalem chips with DDR3 and SATA SSDs? Ice Lake and NVMe?), and struggle to see why it would matter having an NZ VPS vs, say, Sydney (for much cheaper) when you only have 2 virtual cores and 2GB of RAM to play with. That'll cause a larger issue than the latency.

      So eh.

Based on the Dedicated Server specs (Bloomfield to Haswell) I'm guessing you're getting some pretty old tech for those virtual cores, and there's a good chance they'll be virtual threads.

      • Hi Danvelopment,

Totally agree with you, thats why i mentioned in description pentesters and ethical hackers not normal user. And mostly ethical hackers and pentesters use cmd line tools not graphically. And for cmd line tools 2gb ram is enough like metasploit. Because i am using and mostly working on metasploit.

And Hostperl vps, shared hosting and dedicated hosting price are very low compare to other nz hosting companies. And about hardware if any customer about to know we will happily tell him. Our servers have NVMe SSD and SSD disks.

Whenever you need a VPS for playing around you should use cloud provider free trials. Google cloud for example gives you $300 usd for free which lasts for a year last time i checked and allow you to run well spec'd servers for free, with a wide range of OS to choose from, probably including Kali linux. Oracle cloud and Microsoft had similar free trials but with a shorter trial period and more restrictions.

If you wanted to do pen-testing on Kali linux it would be better to test it out on your PC for free (if your PC isn't a potato). Look into VMware workstation or Virtualbox if you want to run multiple OS on the same machine simultaneously. That way you can revisit your activities at any time without paying a monthly server hosting fee.

      • Hi Allblacks,

Agreed, just need to do port forwarding. So you can exploit local network and use proxychains in msf easily.
