Options to Park Private Cars When Leaving The Country for Months

Hi guys, I'll have to travel overseas for about 3 months and I don't have a garage at home to safely park my car, I know there're car parks around the airport, for example, AKL Airport Park&Ride costs $650 for 3 months, but I don't mind the location if there're other cost-efficient options in Auckland. Thank you : )

  • as long as your car's WOF and registration will still be valid after 3 months, you can leave it on a street with no time restrictions. if you dont want to do that, leaving it at a friend or family members house would also be an option (even leaving it on their street so they can keep an eye on it / move the car if needed)

Someone else asked almost the same question not long ago - have a search on CC for that thread.

  • No. You can only park in the same spot for up to 7 days on the street before having to move your car to another spot. Else you risk it getting towed away

    • Where do you see this? I have searched through legislation/bylaws/etc and have been unable to confirm that this is actually a thing. Would be great if you can confirm please.

    • If only that were true:

If the vehicle is 'broken down' and / or a safety issue, then perhaps different.

Where did you get the seven day thing from?

      • yeah ive seen a car parked since 2019, it finally got towed at the start of this year (rego expired 2020)

        • AT or whatever the local equivalent is will get there eventually, but seven days seems wildy optimistic :-(

          • @Alan6984: AT dont ever come down that road so thats probably why it took so long to be towed.

    • Nationwide, that only applies to trailers:Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 6.19 (1)

  • Wellington's bylaw where I'm at. Although it could also apply elsewhere i reckon. I've heard its enforced in queenstown too

    • I understood Wellington was the same as Auckland - the seven day rule was only for 'broken down' vehicles, so would not apply in the case of someone legitimately parking on the street.

Drop it at my place, I'll only charge you $500

I think let AT towed will be cheaper? haha

ask one of the secure storage units that has cars and boats parking and see how much they charge.
