  • Why go for 1080p? Might as well spend a bit extra to get this:

good one, but it is wired vs wireless with battery included.

      • +1

I always tell people to go for wired whenever possible. You don't lose any features and you set it up once and forget about it. With wireless, you'd have to recharge the battery and some features like 24/7 continuous recording are disabled (as they drain battery life). There's literally no upside to installing a wireless one.

There are certain things in life that people shouldn't be cheap and save money on, such as power supplies for your gaming PCs or whatever. Security cameras is one of them. You want to record clear footage? Don't go with 1080p. You want to make sure footage is recorded without any limitations? Don't go with battery powered ones. Get a good one, get it installed properly, done and forget.

        • Generally I agree. But there are of course situations where battery is superior. You can't beat them for ease of installation. Or areas where a power supply is difficult. Most these days can have solar panels so they are still "set and forget." What happens when there is a power cut or your crim just turns off the mains? With battery you are still covered. With mains you're unprotected unless you also want to stump up for a UPS to supply them. For really critical stuff it's actually not a bad idea to have both mains and battery powered cameras in the mix.

@kiwical: If someone already has wired cameras and they want wireless in the mix, then that's all good. However, if they're buying their first security camera, then I still recommend going with wired.

The chance of a power cut happening is rare, almost zero to none. I can't recall the last time I've had a power cut and I would imagine for most people that this wouldn't be a problem.

The more important thing is continuous recording, which again isn't something that most wireless cams can offer. Most wireless cams only support record on motion detection and guess what, there are false positives. I own and have used many different brands, ranging from Eufy, Wyze, Swann, Arlo and a bunch of other off-brand ones. Some have really good AI detection for motion, i.e they know the difference between a person, vehicle, pet and parcel package. Then there are others that are absolute trash. The ones that are really good are usually quite good at dealing with false positives, but they are not perfect. When a motion has occurred and the camera misses this and fails to record, then it makes the camera useless. When a false positive motion is detected, the camera records useless footage and drains battery, which is unnecessary as well.

Not to mention that motion detection requires you to configure the zone in which you're interested in looking at. If motion occurs outside of your configured zone, the camera doesn't pick it up. For example, the camera could be pointing at your front gate, but if someone jumps over the fence instead of opening your gate, your camera doesn't pick this up. You're relying solely on motion detection based on the areas you've configured and the type of motion to detect.

Using solar panel to power the camera is a good option, but then that's another accessory to purchase and this adds to the cost. Not to mention you actually need a decent amount of sun to make it worthwhile. Good luck using this during rainy season, which happens a lot in Auckland.

Ease of install doesn't mean anything. Too many people look at this alone when it comes to buying a security camera. Just because something is easy to install, doesn't mean it's the right way to do it, or doesn't mean it's actually any good.

If you really want to use good wireless cameras, I recommend going with Wyze instead. They have battery-powered outdoor cameras that come with extra addon accessories such as solar panel and spotlight. They use a starlight sensor that turns night into day and gives it full colour. It's a real game changer and I recommend checking out example videos of this. Eufy has starlight sensor as well, but I found the quality on them to be a bit worse than Wyze.

Furthermore, Wyze cams can actually daisy-chain together to share the power, which makes it really awesome if you want to be creative with how you power them. You can always get a 10m USB cable and hook it up to a backup battery-bank instead of using a UPS.

Anyway, most of the issues with wired cameras are not really issues for most people. You might run into a power cut maybe like once or twice a year, which is nothing. But you wouldn't want to have zero continuous recording 365 days in a year. Solely relying on motion detection makes using a security pointless. I wouldn't 100% trust motion detection. Even dedicated apps like BlueIris and iSpy that have deep customizable motion detection parameters aren't 100% perfect.

Do be aware that Eufy just released their new 'v3' range that does 4k resolution. They'll be premiumly priced when they hit NZ though.

        • Whats' the link on the supercheap site, please? I can't find it

As far as I can tell these require a monthly subscription for recording any video? $4.95 NZD a month.
    Also has no local recording

"Ring devices don’t require a Ring Protect subscription plan. Without a subscription, you can view real-time video for Ring doorbells and security cameras and answer doorbell notifications as they happen. However, without a Ring Protect plan, you won't get video recordings of those events."

    https://ring.com/au/en/protect-plans

*Note for New Zealand customers: Protect Plans are charged in NZD.
Choose Basic for NZ$4.95 (or $49.95/year) or choose Plus for NZ$15/month (or NZ$150/year).
