Healthy food choices for the north island, junk food for the south island. Yay! 🙄

    • South Island: food that will keep orchardists awake during frost season

Their prices aren't much different to those offered at Pak n Saves either

      • This year's deals are disappointing but I'm hoping my local New World does some exclusive deals, I remember once they sold half a dozen eggs for $0.99!

It just annoys me because they're the same damn company.

I think the Trumpets are good because they've been stuck around $7 for a while now.

@Plug: Each NW and PNS (and FourSquare) is owned independently.

FoodStuffs does not own any stores as far as I know (I might be wrong though).

That's why you regularly see PNS and NW competing with each other (and everyone else) especially all the ones that are a few mins walk from each other.

@Alan6984: I don't think they compete on prices, at least not in my area. NW is marketed as their premium brand, so prices for most things are often more than PS. Very occasionally NW may have something cheaper than PS, but that is rare. Countdown and PS do compete more on price, but Countdown is usually more expensive. This is just from my own experience. New Zealand really needs stores like ASDA , ALDI etc, who have a whole range of cheaper food. Supermarkets do sell cheaper no name brands, as well as home brands, but they often are that much cheaper than the known brands. Costco may help with competition but they often sell in bulk and then people need places to store food, and I suspect there will be a lot of waste.

              • @nzmax: Not sure where you are, but around us they definitely compete with each other.

For example, at Botany, you have PNS, NW, and CD all within a few mins walk of each other, and the two FoodStuffs stores are always trying to get customers to them rather than the other / CD.

CD aren't as agile obviously - they operate as a national chain, all owned by Woolworths, so I suspect the local stores have less autonomy, and the 'specials' are generally the same across all CD stores.

The FoodStuffs stores can negotiate their own deals with suppliers too - hence they will compete on specials etc in that way too.

You also see the NW and PNS stores competing with the other local stores in the same banner. Botany PNS competes with Ormiston PNS, and NW Botany competes with NW Howick for example.

Each owner wants your dollar spent in their store - they get no more from you buying from another FoodStuffs store than they do from you buying from a CD store.

                • @Alan6984: I'm in the Wellington region where stores are more spread out, so there probably isn't as much competition, and I think people tend to stick to shopping in their areas for food. I find Petone PS is often cheaper all of the time for many things, compared to other PS around the region. I find Countdown prices seem to be about the same between different stores, but that is probably because they own them all , unlike PS which seem to be owner operators, where they can set their own prices.

I notice egg prices are up and down most of the time, at the moment, there seem to be a shortage, prices have remained high for a while, CD has also stopped doing clearance on eggs.
